What if I liked the original Batman, but I still preferred The Dark Knight? Would it be overrated yet still? I disagree with your reason for it being overrated. It's too overly subjective in my book.
I prefer The Dark Knight believe it or not, so no that dosen't make it overrated.

What makes it overrated is when so many idiots say "TDK is perfect, 89 Batman is sucky and has no redeeming quality at all" and just spout out a bunch of arguments that contradict themselves.

I do think that while TDK is overall a better film, there were some things that the 89 film did way better, and it shouldn't hurt people so damn much to just acknowledge that. I find that a lot of the things people criticize 89 Batman for are actually among it's strong points.

For example, when people say Batman is too quiet and out of the spotlight, well that's who Batman is, and when people say The Joker is too goofy and over the top, well that's who The Joker is. I thought Keaton was the better Batman because he was much more subtle, the fact that he didn't "look" like Batman is what made him so good for the role.

Burton's film also had the better visual style and way better music so there were certainly things about it that were better than TDK.

These I definitely agree with, I love Tim Burton as a director, he's actually one of favorites, but I wouldn't let other people's ignorance let me call one of the greatest films of 2008 overrated.

Serenity: In a lot of ways this was on par with a sci fi original movie, why is it so popular?
Because it's funny and smart and entertaining. What is it that you dislike about it exactly?

Just about every film Kevin Smith ever made: I can't think of one moment from any of his films that actually made me laugh, not one, and they're made even less enjoyable when knowing how much of a total douche Smith is. By far the most overrated filmmaker of our generation.
How is he a douche? Everything I've ever seen of his makes him seem really nice actually. :\

I was actually watching this last night but stopped it halfway through to finish today (which i NEVER do) because i was so bored. I love these sort of films but where's the substance and witty one liners? I probably shouldn't really judge at this point but there's nothing engaging about it.

Seconded.

He's one of the only people who didn't come across douchey to me when I read his autobiography. He actually seems really cool.

Well we certainly a very different order of Tim Burton Preference, that's for sure. We somewhat agree on the top and the bottom though. Just for shits and giggles, here's how I'd order that list:

1. Edward Scissorhands
2. Ed Wood
3. Beetlejuice
4. Batman Returns
5. Mars Attacks
6. Batman
7. Sleepy Hollow
8. Corpse Bride
9. Big Fish
10. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
11. Pee Wee's Big Adventure
12. Nightmare Before Christmas
13. Planet of the Apes
14. Sweeny Todd

Ha, this is precisely how I would order my list. Edward Scissorhands and Nightmare Before Christmas are just amazing.

Ouch, somebody must really hate Sweeny Todd to put it below Planet of the frickin Apes.

Basically the only Burton films I don't like are Mars Attacks and the Apes remake.
