I really want to make my own 1001 album list....mainly i just want to revisit these albums in full before i post

i feel this will be slow going but constant....unlike my other attempt at a journal....thius will have listening variety so i won't get bored

i don't want these to be in any order....i genuinely love every album i will post

above are the contributions to the music banter edition that i made which will constitute my first 30 albums....i added links to the post if by chance you care

31. Dwarves - Blood Guts and Pussy (1990)

many people hate the Dwarves for whatever reason....me i love them

pure juvenile nonsense with delightful satanic overtones....and an obvious "i don't give a fuck attitude"

and this album is in my opinion their peak

right from viewing the album cover you know you're in for a real treat....two naked women covered in blood and a dwarf holding a dead rabbit

this album punches you in the face while massaging you...a perfect example of great American hardcore music with....clocking in at just over 15 minutes this album is a true testament to punk rock....to quote a friend of mine.....

"Blood Guts and Pussy is the "Funhouse" of the 90s"

i could not agree more.

I saw the Dwarves circa 95. The show lasted about 7 minutes and was one of the most intense concerts of my life. It felt like the club was blasting off into space in a tornado while being hit by a tsunami.

32. Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse - Dark Night of the Soul (2009)

first and foremost.....i honestly do not think i would have ever heard this album if i did not start visiting this site

when i fist came here this album was quite the buzz....and at first listen i was really not that impressed....for me it took the perfect listening situation to really bring this out....a long overnight drive through the Nevada desert with a perfect BRIGHT full moon....the surreal, shadowed landscape along with the sensitive despondency of the music mixed perfect...and i must say every time i listen to this album the feelings of that night return

the vocal variety on this album really pulls it together for me...specifically Susan Vega, The Flaming Lips and Julian Casablancas....but the inclusion of Frank Black and Iggy Pop are also perfectly placed



33. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence (2014)

i can't think of any singer/songwriter out today that seems to have such a strong divide....and i can honestly say that before this album i though Lana was really nothing special....a great voice for sure...but...eh at best

it was Engine in the what song says how your feeling thread posting "Money Power Glory"....listening to that tracked peaked interest....so i bought the album right then....and again "It Took a Night to Believe".....i left Portland Or at 11pm and drove straight into Reno....about an 11 hour drive through the mountains....and listened to this album on repeat.....this one is much different than Born to Die....there is a strong noir feel to it....and Del Rey laps ups the femme fatale motief perfectly.....i fell i love with this album....a love i have not lost in any way shape or form....i love the vocals on West Coast....and the snarkiness on Brooklyn Baby and Fucked My Way to the Top....but it was not until i really paid attention to her writing on the title track...a song about being in a horrible co-dependent and abusive relationship....it wasn't until i really paid attention to these lyrics and stared to wonder who "Jim" was...when it hit me that "Jim" is Jim Beam ("He hit me and it felt like a kiss") and the abuser is herself...that this song started to cut me to the bone....shit i've listened to it three times while writing this review....i can honestly say that this song is up there with Kate Bush's Cloudbusting as one of my favorite songs ever

seeing her live finalized my love for herl....as Born to Die will be on this list and i'm sure Honeymoon will also

34. Masada - Live In Middelheim (1999)

as i said earlier....part of what i'm looking forward to with this is revisiting albums that i love but maybe don't pay much attention to anymore...

this is an excellent case of that....i have not listened to this album in full for at least 10 years....sure it's always on my Ipod and i love when a track appears on random....but this week i listened to it four times beginning to end

i went through a very strong free jazz phase in my early 20s....right when Masada was fresh and exciting for even the oldest of jazz snobs

in my opinion there is something especially unique about this band live....you'll see a few more live recordings and at least two studio albums later ....

they are amazingly tight on this recording....and this was my real introduction to the drumming of Joey Baron....who by the way is fucking god

something i want to try to continue is a close personal reflection on why these albums mean so much to me....

this one involve driving from Reno to Sacramento over a mountain in a snow storm.....mid day so the sun was peeping through the dark storm clouds....driving 20 miles an hour cause i had chains on and it was snowing incredible hard....this album blaring through my speakers....keeping all my nerves at edge

if you've never heard Masada....please understand that this is John Zorn at a completely different level than any of his other recordings....Jewish or not i think its hard to say that there is not something magical about these recordings....especially the live ones



35. Rudimentary Peni - Death Church (1983)

While not my introduction to this band....this album solidified an unending love for them...

the music is a bit slower for the most part....but is so drenched in despondency....it matches the lyrics of coping with ones own loss of sanity and discontent and misunderstanding of human beings so perfectly

i can honestly say i would have never gotten into punk music if not for this band....this is one of the first albums where i listened to the lyrics and allowed the music to be a representation of those feelings....which is exactly what i love about punk rock.....a perfect mix of lyrical expression that matches the music perfectly

on a personal note....when i first bought this album in the mid 90s i was smoking a lot of weed....in the town i lived in weed was a very social drug and usually involved neo hippies.....i would go to their houses buy my shit but they always wanted to hand out and get high (on my weed) and talk about their music.....i would always endure their jam band 60s bullshit and then after looking through their record collection say "hey can i choose next?"...they assumed i found some incredible album....but instead i would pull mine from my bag and play this....pointing out the specifics on the song "Radio Schizo"

36. N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton (1988)

Putting aside the importance of the music and lyrics....this album was basically made with Ezay's crack dealing money...or at least Ruthless was started with it....the production is surprisingly great and this album still seems as relevant as it did when i first heard it in the early 90s

the music is definitely of that era of Hip Hop....tons of scratching and great samples....including some great samples from Beastie Boys License to Ill....and the lyrics are genre changing

this album really does not have a bad track....while some are obviously stronger than others....it really is a solid album from beginning to end

i saw the film of the same name this weekend....and just want to say...

both the movie and the album are dope as fuck


37. Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1994)

i'm by the end of this i'll have all of their albums on this list...so might as well start with my favorite

this album really represents what i love about this band....really good and somewhat complex punk rock....amazing well written lyrics...and Blake's smoking scarred voice

again....not s single bad track....this is a testament to the 90s puck scene...and in my opinion is one of the greatest punk albums of all time...with lyrics ranging from wanting to be simplistic, being in love, having your heart broken....and then don';t even get me started on the emotional depth of Condition Oakland

this was also the last Jawbreaker album before Blake had a surgery to help his throat....

38. Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love (1985)

The first side of Hounds of Love contains 5 incredible stand alone songs...all of them truly invoke some form of emotional response in me....some (Hounds of Love and Cloudbusting often invoke a physical response)

i don't even think this is Kate's best work....actually her follow up to this album is amazing...and listening to Hounds of Love and The Sensual World back to back is an amazing journey of maturing.....

What always amazes me is my memories of watching the video for Cloudbusting as a 9 year old and what a profound impact it had on me.....and how interesting that the person that song is about has become one of my favorite people in the history of mankind....it goes the same with DEVO's impact on me as a child....who also often included odes to Wilhelm Reich

so then we go to side two of Hounds of love....which is something completely different....haunting and beautiful and honestly somewhat full of mystery....The Ninth Wave is certainly telling a heartbreaking story.....i think she really does an amazing job of forcing the listener to interpret this story for themselves....which is proof of what an amazing artists she is.....by far And Dream of Sheep and Waking the Witch are masterpieces of Kate Bush


39. Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today (1989)

in my most humble opinion.....this album is the greatest NYC hardcore album every released.....my blood pressure rises the second i hear the horn intro to New Direction

yeah this is short, raw and fairly simple....or hardcore by numbers...but it's so fucking perfect....and as being someone who really believes that when it comes to hardcore music....lyrics take the front stage....and the lyrics on this album are spot on....from taking down white supremacists to the concept of getting older to questioning what cats and dogs are more important than other animals....

these guys take on these subjects of growing up and reflection on ego with bombastic songs....that are honestly as important to me now as they were when i fist heard them in 1991


40. Death In June - Operation Humming Bird (2000)

this is the follow up to the amazing Take Care and Control....which was the first of a few collaborations with Albin Julius of Der Blutharsch...creating a less "folk" sound and more of a martial attack

this one has a bit of a rawer production value which i actually think makes it a bit better....as it just works with the general feel of the the album

i feel this album...which is quite short creates a depressive concept of history dead and apocalyptic futures while also creating a might as well ****ing dance feeling...specifically with the sampling of Bridget Bardot's Contact in the song Flieger
