I havent lost hope in mainstream music, because I dont hold a high expectation of it in the first place. I expect alot of it to be relatively easy to digest, and to act as a gateway to the genre that they represent. All of us here, no matter what music we like, at some point would have been into the mainstream music. Its from there we develop a taste and then delve deeper into the genre we most enjoy.

I always felt as if this debate has been repeated endlessly regardless of decade (to be honest). I don't mind Mainstream music..there are a few gems now and then. What I always found to be interesting is that when one likes a tune from a band that is not known as well as others ...say it is Alternative..and then more people like it..therefore it becomes "Mainstream". And then what happens is that the band who created that little gem of a song has now created a song which has entered the popular realm and can therefore not be liked anymore by the Alternative crowd because that band has become deemed a sellout due to their popularity factor. Then of course you cannot like that band anymore because so many others like them..therefore you must start listening to some band that is heard by few but is considered good and has not sold out. Or a band that was considered a sellout at a certain time but now has not created an album in so long that the original "sell-out" album it has either became a classic and therefore ok to listen to because so few listen to it or it has returned to its Alternative status or became Retro.

Apologies for the rant but this seems to have happened over and over and over for quite a while. I am sure that there are quite as many good songs in the Mainstream genre at the moment as there always have been honestly. Just enjoy it.

It doesn't really matter to me if it's popular or not. If I like it, then I like it.

(Although, the majority of the popular musicians that I normally listen to are those of the 60s and 70s).

If I like it, I like it. I do feel like music is going two different ways, though. On one hand, you have good artists like Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Bad Religion, Lady Gaga, Daughtry, and even some Nickelback I kinda like. I also dig some Linkin Park and Bruno Mars (even though Grenade and Just The Way You Are are WAY overplayed now).

But on the other hand, you have Rebecca Black, Ke$ha, and the other crap that should be illegal to even listen to. It's awful, and is destroying music. Why? Because creativity and artistry has gone out the window in favor of technical effects, money, and fame. It's ridiculous. Those two I mentioned have no talent. Zero. I hate their singing, and the lyrics suck even more. And Ke$ha looks like a dumb drunken whore every time I see her nasty face.

Lots of pop artists use instruments in their songs. Pop is hard to make, it takes some schooling to be able to do "that computer generated crap". It really depends how you look at it. Try looking at what you like about it- maybe it's the synthesized drum beat (which isn't easy either to make), or the very nicely harmonized, cut, and layered singing. It's not like one button the editors press to do that, you know- it takes time, patience, and practice... just like any other form of music.

Why don't you try thinking of the computer as a set of the newest instruments of our time! =) Besides, if I could instantly learn how to do what any artist does, I would want to learn how to do what Lady Gaga does just like her. Sure, it would be cool to play like Muddy Waters but think of the money! Much less people instantly like the sound of muddy's guitar then the well-refined, harmonized sounds of Lady Gaga. Fuck I'd love to "sell out". Soooo much money, so much money.
