I went with Genesis - a long time favourite band of mine.
I have definite and set ideas why I'd choose this band over alot of prog rock bands from the 70's... one of them is that it never seemed like their music was vacant - it always seemed to have a purpose. Each part of a long suite or complicated piece seemed to serve the song well and draw it together as a cohesive statement. With a few notable exceptions, you never found yourself bored or meandering through a Genesis album from the Seventies - it all felt bristling, energetic snd meaningful... I honestly find myself drifting away in the space and openness of a Floyd album - I need the engaging nautre of Genesis' music to carry me through my prog rock experience...
