Their new album is insane. I love it. Better than Christ Illusion. It reminds me of Season in the Abyss a whole lot. Very fast and heavy.

Better? Not to me it is isn't but different strokes and all that I guess. The guitars are nowhere heavy enough for me.

Really? For me Hell Awaits definitely has something. I also like Seasons a lot and I even like South of Heaven - that's more nostalgia as South of Heaven and ...And Justice for All were my two of my first thrash tapes. It was a fun summer ('88).

I found a lot of Christ Illusion was heavy and whatnot, but unlike previous Slayer, not very riff-based. And the songs that were riff-based had crappy riffs that weren't very memorable.
WPB has songs like Americon and Psychopathy Red that have riffs that get stuck in your head.
The guitars are quite heavy in this album for me, Public Display of Dismemberment is one of the heavier songs off the albm and is very Seasons.

I can hear snippets of many previous albums in WPB, as far back as Reign in Blood. I think its a collective masterpiece

My opinion

I lost interest in Slayer pretty much after high school.
The whole, "I'm 45 and I still hate everything and everyone!" got played out for me.

That's not to say that I won't put on some Raining Blood or Divine Intervention from time to time. There's little things about their mid-career stuff that still gets me pumped.

My official copy of WPB came today, a day early

I had to laugh...

Limited Edition - No 1 of 4 available different covers. 4 covers, same CD, we can blame Metallica for that trend

Who do you think is responsible to answer for that, band or record company or both?

9 days to go until I see them again (3rd time) and this could well be their last tour. Cannot wait.
