Oh cool cool, yeah that damn theory...that and all the stupid modes of the major scale. Have you ever tried to read those lessons out of Guitar World that people like Jeff Lommes (sp?) or Malmsteen write?

My choices:
Jimmy Page - he is very experimental and he can write great ballads as well great hard rock songs. He is talented on both electric (Since I've Been Loving You) and acoustic (Rain Song) and his playing on White Summer is excellent Ritchie Blackmore - I can't believe no-one mentioned him. Just listen to the solo in Child In Time if you disagree. Dave Gilmour - 5 words: Shine On You Crazy Diamond Nuff said. |

jimmy hendrix; he's just a great guitarist period. great musician. |

i think hendrix is more overrated than page imo. If your talking about guitarists, that is. As a musician, hendrix is probbably better, taking into consideration that he was the lead singer, songwriter, and that he played a right handed guitar when he was a lefty. However, if youre just talking about straight up guitar playing, jimmy page outdoes hendrix any day of the week. Page had more songs, better riffs, longer solos, etc. Correct me if i'm wrong but i have yet to hear a song by hendrix with an acoustic, however, page had a great number of acoustic songs that were totally amazing. black mountain side, bron-y-aur, babe im gonna leave you, etc. Page was so much more diverse in my opinion. I also prefer the tone of pages guitar too, but thats just my preference.

I think steve vai is probably the the best technical guitarist, but I like the sound of eric johnson, he has an awesome style. and then me...joke

I have a number of guitar influences, but no one single person can really claim the title of greatest guitarists.
heres my list: clapton - blues instramental guitar - vai or satch shred - Michael Angelo Battio (fastest shredder in the world i think) Rock - Saul Hudson (Slash) |
Rite Can I Just Say That For About A Year I Was A Nirvana Obsessive And Liked All The Music But Never In My Life Will I Say Kurt Cobain Was A Great Or Even Good Guitarist!!!! He Was A Guy Hu Had An Attitude And Hu Could Play A Few Chords On A Guitar And If He Hadnt Have Blown His Mouth Off, No One Wouldve Heard Of Him!

Ok, I'm going to try and address as much of this thread as possible in one or two posts.
First, my list of favorite ten guitarists, in no order. Not necessarily technical best, just whose style I enjoy: Django Reinhardt (you guys need to check this guy out, he played better than most I've heard, and had only two fingers on his fret hand) Charlie Christian (first guitarist to popularize the electric guitar, and one of the first to bring guitar out of the rhythym section as it had been in swing and make it a soloing instrument, as you can guess, his influence is immeasurable) Frank Zappa David Gilmour Jimi Hendrix John McLaughlin Jimmy Page Jack White (far from technical best, but seeing him play live was awesome) Duane Allman Jorma Kaukonen (listening to him FINGERPICK Embryonic Journey is amazing) That's kind of a loose list, I guess, the guitar is far from my favorite instrument, and I don't think about it much. Now, on to Jimmy Page: he was not the first to use the bow, along with many other riffs, lyrics, etc. (http://www.warr.org/zep.html, go a bit down the page for the list), he took the idea from someone else, in this case, Eddie Phillips of The Creation. Nonetheless, despite not being as original as many would believe, he is a fantastic guitar player, and one of my favorites, as I said above. Most, I think all of the songs you guys listed in the different time signatures, were written by him. I can explain how they work, if you wish. There's no harm in soloing with pentatonic scales, Coltrane (my favorite saxophone soloist of all time, perhaps my favorite soloist period) used them all the time. Kurt Cobain was not a techinically skilled guitarist, but he had style (albeit, style heavily copied from earlier guitarist). Style is what matters by far the most, in my book. Dimebag, I haven't listened to, I don't like metal. Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, their style alternates between being boring and annoying, I don't like it at all. I'm not a fan of Van Halen, Eddie's pretty good at guitar, but he wouldn't make my top 50. |

Ultimate Guitarist Poll
ok my 3rd shot at this haha
we're going on technical/compositional wise. I initially had 49 guitarists, but my 5 mins was running out so I missed some like Keith Richards and Allen Collins. And i put shawn angel and Blackmore twice Goddamnit! Bloody hell it's hard to copy and paste that quickly haha. I need some mod help please |
Is there any point in having a poll based on technical ability? Because technical ability is almost factual. I can look at that poll and instantly say some of those are factually wrong such as Dimebag Darrell, even if he if a pretty awesome songwriter IMO. Adrian Smith is in the same boat.
And there are some guitarists who I can't see any merit in at all (technical, emotion, songwriting, style etc) such as Kirk Hammett. |
Again, Herman Li
GUITAR HERO!!!! |
Okay it's changed...That's what I meant
|
Damn, this poll rocks. I voted other and that other being Thomas Erak (the fall of troy).
|
Robert Johnson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can he not be on there.
|
It would rock more if a mod would help me out, i.e delete the double entries and let me add a few more :P

Aside from that, I would normally vote for John Frusciante, Hendrix, Satriani, Mustaine, Brian May, Dimebag or Akerfeldt. |

Pretty much but I had to pick one and Herman's hair is FAR superior
