The lyrics weren't great BUT they did sum up the problems that the band had whilst recording the album, hence the name smoke on water. Most bands were ripping riffs off one another at that time, so don't hold that against them.

It's not a good riff to begin with, and I'm not one of those people who hates the simple guitar riffs. I love Iron Man, but that riff is actually cool, Smoke on the Water's riff is pretty boring, the keyboards are subpar for a Deep Purple record, there was really nothing in the song, and I can't stress how much I hate the lyrics.
