I think I'm confusing British with American radio. To restate, nothing from either would be particularly elligible to appear on current mainstream radio in the UK. Which I suppose is far from the point that you were actually making. Soz!

well yeah if you're going to subdivide radio to that point sure you're totally right, they won't be on mainstream pop radio in north america either. but am i expected to believe there's no classic rock radio in the UK? hehe

I don't know how much truth there is in this but at the time I beleive it was heavily rumoured Sub Pop was about to be bought out by a major label anyway , so Cobain wanted to sign to a label that wanted Nirvana on it with backing & promotion rather than being just one band among all the other Sub Pop bands having their contracts taken over by a label that might not want them all.

Which makes sense when you think about it. Of course he could have gone to another indie label but took Thurston Moore's advice & went to Geffen. And signing to a major doesn't automatically give you success.

i don't know where the concept that cobain hated the idea of being a successful musician comes from. he might have hated being famous but from anything i've read or seen about the guy he pretty much always wanted to be successful at playing his music. he just didn't want to have to wear spandex and poof his hair or having to pretend like he gave a crap about what some vapid talking head from the tv asked him when it was the 400th time he was asked the same question that week.

pearl jam was never anti-success. they were anti ticketmaster doubling the cost of tickets with additional fees and surcharges.

Sub Pop signed a deal with Warner around roughly '95. I think Nirvana more left Sub Pop because they were kind of being treated as losers by the label and bands like Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc were being championed to break out while they were basically being ignored. They even had to pay Sub Pop back for the Love Buzz single.
