Kurt himself said he wrote crap disjointed lyrics and wited until the last minute and that none of it made any sense really. He said that in 1993 about his lyrics, that people read too much into them , and that really, he just wrote a bunch of garbage that sometimes made no sense, and live he would sometimes trick the crowd by singing non-sensical crap into the mic, he do that for fun sometimes.
Kurt wrote come pretty good songs. On the other hand after a few songs it seemed like he was writing the same song over and over, but the first few sounded good and seemed to be writen pretty well. Although because of the fact after a few songs the lyircs started to sound the same i'll have to go with him not being a genius... a few songs doesn't make anyone a genius. and as for him singing random things into the mic during shows to fool his fans.. i think its because he forgot his own lyrics maybe.

So to me the song is (at least partially) about how society tries to convince people that being unhappy or having mental issues is an ultimate evil but often the alternative isn't really better. I guess that could also serve as an analogy to Kurt's own views on success and how he felt like he had it better when he wasn't a superstar... but that might be reading to deeply into it.
or...

when some people get depressed then become happy, some start to ruin there own happiness because inside in some hiden spot in there brain they were so used to feeling a depressed way that feeling any other way just felt wrong and like they weren't being themselves.. when in actual fact they were but they just felt untrue because happiness like saddness brings out different things in them. even if a person doesn't like being depressed they get comfortable being that way mentally and in other ways i'm sure. Some people don't realize this until they reach a high of happiness and feel uncomfortable.. which i think happened in Kurts case, well something like it. He was in a band that was doing alright where they lived, any idiot knows you make a video chances are your going to get heard and people will most liekly pay attention. At one point before this huge grunge thing took off i'm sure there was a point where this band was just normal underground music and they were fine doing this, then i'm sure 'someone' found this awesome band blah blah blah happened and then they were making a record ONLY they shouldn't have made a video and gotten popular.. why? because kurt clearly didn't realize what he was getting himself into. because he didn't like that the type of people he grow up hating/disliking were some of his biggest fans, and other reasons. They should have stayed and underground band.

Is it just me or is rape me's intro smells like teen spirit in a different key?

a) What does that have to do with Frances Farmer or any of the lyrics
b) How does what you know about Kurt in any way hint that that was the meaning

and

c) That doesn't make sense.

Kurt knew what he was getting into. He signed a major label deal with Geffen and leaving Sub Pop.

He knew damn well what he was getting into. Once he got into it, he even changed the royalty rates on the bands music, so he got 75% and Krist and Dave split 25%.. it used to be a three way even split. But once he got famous, he changed, and the pressures of it got to him.

what Kurt didnt like is the fact that major labels now owned his ass, and when they said jump, he had no choice but to say 'how high'

it turned into a job, and they were his bosses. He did not like it, and was very unhappy over it. He started to realize that Geffen now owned his music, he no longer did. It was no longer his, it was and still remains Geffens. his drug use went out of control more and more, he knew he sold his soul to the man and then he blew his brains out because that saddened him so much.

he woke up one day and realized the dream was actually a nightmare. They own you and make you the star. They run your life. You no longer have your own life. You belong to them now. And he just could no longer deal with it. and even in death, he still belongs to them, and they still rape his soul for money by selling his journals and music. he was a commodity then, and hes a commodity now, and thats what killed him.

you could have just said 'he sold his soul to the record label' and i would have understood that.

i know all about that but like i said he didn't know what he was getting into when he signed that big deal with them, if he did do you honestly think he would have signed it knowing it would some day drive him to the point of death? (that drove him plus other things), so clearly he didn't realize the full damage of what signing with that record lable would do to him. Yes he changed i never said he didn't, anyone would change having that much fame no matter how much they didn't want to.

Considering i've read a few articles in which cobain talks about what his songs are about. I kind of don't believe what you're saying because you havn't posted any actual proof.

Just to add to the whole major label thing. If Cobain was such a tool to them, why did he write Rape Me? And why did he play the intro to rape me on that awards show (mtv's I believe) just to piss people off? I really don't think he was as big of a corporate tool as you make him out to be.

Ya, I think he knew what he was getting into, because Kurt Cobain was not a stupid individual. He was not a dummy. He knew what he was doing when he signed with Geffen, he was inking a major label deal, something his punk rock ethics supposedly made him against. how against signing with a major was he?

not very - he signed the deal. he knew that made him a sell-out to his punk rocker freinds. They all thought he sucked for doing that, and he knew it.

He had no way of predicting the mania that erupted around them, but that was dying off by 1994, they were no longer as big as they were in 1991. It was waning and the band was actually broken up when Kurt died. Nirvana wasnt even a band anymore by march 1994. They begrudgingly finished their In Utero tour in 94, with lot sof cancellations. And Krist has confirmed the band split up after the tour, and Dave was already doing new material and planning a new band at the time.

when Kurt died, he wasnt in Nirvana. Nirvana was over. he was done.
