They worked better when they weren't fortysomething years old and trying to fit in to the popular culture...hate to admit it. I have a feeling they are just going to go downhill until they eventually fall apart....(figuratively or literally..). They're creativity is pretty much non existent any more and they've gone from being THE metal band (meaning that they easily the most popular in their hayday), to being something that I would almost go as far as to consider mainstream rock. This is not to say that mainstream rock is a bad genre to be in because there are definitely some mainstream rock bands that I enjoy listening to. But when they are what they once were......it's a step in the wrong direction.

hopefully it will be a hybrid of new and old. take the style of st. anger and make it more guitar riffy and melodic. that would kick arse.

I know what you mean by that. I still think they're gonna pick up business anyway. Even if they don't, I enjoyed St. Anger for what it was, and will probably enjoy the next album. Granted it wont get better than before the 90's ever again. =/

Last year there was this "new song" floating around on youtube that wasn't all that bad to be honest. Some of the riffing reminded me a bit of the Load album but the structure had a fairly progressive feeling and the solo was pretty decent.

Yeah they played it at some tour, can't remember the name but Levithian was there. He said it was awesome. I might go seek out that thread when I get home.
