I'm looking for some really slow rock riffs, seem to be a thing for me lately.

In the vein of:
Arctic monkeys - Do I wanna know
Elbow - Grounds for Divorce
Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar
Metallica - Sad but True

There are a few others but I can't think atm

I can't be listening to Gorguts all the time.

I guess it's up to us then. Not sure if you've heard them, but I found Negativa after finding out they share some members with Gorguts. They're pretty badass, but they only released a 3 track EP due to scheduling issues with the grim reaper, unfortunately.

That dude gets a rec but I don't. That's some bullsh*t right there haha. I'll try this again later and see what I get.

Frownland 08-12-2015 10:14 AM

I actually made the initial request that he ended up seconding, so I took it into my own hands.

haha, well I have only ever managed to get one rec so far posting in here. Apparently I am hard to rec, because supposedly I am vague.

Great stuff! Thanks.

for some reason, the first song that popped in my mind was "dragonaut" by sleep... it's a stoner rock song (yes, you CAN listen to it if you're not a stoner)

My two cents: Sixx AM-This is gonna hurt. Lies of the beautiful people is the most well-written and executed hard rock song I've heard in years. These guys are actually saying something in their lyrics and not just screaming "daddy didn't love me" like seems to be common in a lot of "metal" these days. :)

MicShazam 09-04-2015 05:30 AM

I really like bands that are hard to categorize - not necessarily weird or complex. For example, I really love Waltari and Stam1na. I'd like some general metal recommendations for anything that is very obscure (so I haven't already heard it) and hard to put in a box.

Try these couple if you don't know them yet. Though, Thy Catafalque isn't very obscure, I feel it's worth a chance in case you happen to not know them.

Thy Catafalque -- Szervetlen | Thy Catafalque

Mourning Mist -- Rise And Decay | Forever Plagued Records

To be honest, though, I feel like even really avant-garde metal bands can have their style (or styles of albums/songs if the stuff differs within their discographies enough) categorized accurately with enough adjectives, within reason. Also, were you asking more for bands with a unique and interesting mix of styles, or more-so a band which has a lot of variety between their own songs/within their own discography?

I guess any kind of interesting stylistic mix is good. I mentioned Stam1na for instance; their albums sound kinda samey, but they also sound very idiosyncratic, like some kind of melodic, prog thrash thing with an odd melodic sensibility.
Bands that try out all kinds of styles between songs/albums are fine too, unless the individual songs become too genre-typical. Really just anything that you feel avoids (easy) categorization or pigeon-holing.

About your two recommendations: I do know Thy Catafalque already as my brother is into them, but I need to check up on them again. It's been a long time!

I don't think I've heard Mourning Mist so I'll check them out too and see what I think.

MetalcoreMan 09-18-2015 04:35 AM

Deathcore/metalcore bands: thy art is murder, bring me the horizon, Emmure, ADTR. All of these bands have amazing growls.

Here's better metalcore than all of those bands.

MetalcoreMan 09-18-2015 10:17 AM

Underøath's albums "Act of Depression" and "cries of the past" is about the same as that.

I'm checking out that first Underoath album, and it's a bit similar, but Arkangel have them beat hands down as far as intensity. Honestly, bands with this kind of sound seem to have been a dime a dozen in the late-nineties/early-00s, and this isn't really impressing me that much. Vocalist is a bit crap, band's too tepid, and too much mid-paced chugging. If I'm gonna listen to that much mid-paced breakdowns, then I'll stick to Poison the Well's first album. Check out Kickback or Reprisal for a better version of what Underoath seem to be doing on Act of Depression.

MetalcoreMan 09-18-2015 07:01 PM

It's alright. But I like Dallas Taylor with his screams. Have you seen the new underoath songs? What do you think of them to the old ones?

The Batlord 09-18-2015 07:17 PM

Oh, and speaking of deathcore, I'm not a fan at all (I can listen to a couple songs by Suicide Silence before I need to switch to something else), but I remember a one-album band from back in the day called Eternal Lord who were pretty awesome. Melodic, but without being melodic metalcore, and their album, Blessed Be This Nightmare, had a pretty sweet sludgy production.

They're pretty standard deathcore, but ****ing kill. Gonna have to go download that album.

That's the only Underoath I've ever listened to, so I can't say.

In case you don't already know the obvious ones.

Unfortunately they keep taking down this band's studio recordings off of Youtube, so this is the best I can do, but Acid Bath's first album is one of the best things ever recorded by any band ever. For some reason the sound is out of sync with the video though.

Jackson Browne - The Pretender

Rick1990 10-11-2015 07:36 AM

Pestilent Reign

Pretty damn fun Death Metal. Love the singing.
Okay, those are guys I know, so I might be biased, but on the other hand basically everyone of my friends plays music and this is the first time I share something here.

Alt/Prog Metal

Greetings, all, I'm looking for new alt/experimental/progressive metal bands. I love Tool, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Dream Theater, Deftones (don't judge) and Gojira. Does anyone know of some new or up and coming bands that sound like these?

Thanks in advance,

STORNOCK

Any recs for raw, primitive thrash in the vein of Slayer?
This might be an ignorant statement (I'm not and have never been into thrash), but it mostly sounds a lot like heavy metal to me, which is too polished a genre for my taste.
