Early American power metal may not be what you're looking for, but as far "rawness" goes, it was at least not what you're used to from either MTV thrash or European power metal. Cheesy it may still have been, but it was metal at its purest. Iron Maiden without the polish, basically. |
But if you're not willing to go that far, then early eighties black metal might have some goodness for you. Raw and trashy (by today's standards), but still extreme for its time.
|
I usually really dislike heavy/power metal singing, but I'll still check those out.
One of the reasons I enjoy Slayer so much is the unobtrusiveness, non-cheesiness and non-ridiculousness of Araya's singing. I'm pretty familiar with early BM, but my perception might have changed and I'll check those out as well. Thanks! |
If you want to get into 80s metal, then you have to get over cheesiness. Otherwise you might as well just keep on as you've been going on. 80s metal is cheesy for the most part and there's just no getting around it. But metal cheese is the highest quality Gouda, so I implore you to try.
Oh, check out Celtic Frost. They are certainly dated, but they were arty as all ****. Thrash, black, and avant garde metal all in one... |
Greetings, all, I'm looking for new alt/experimental/progressive metal bands. I love Tool, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mastodon, Dream Theater, Deftones (don't judge) and Gojira. Does anyone know of some new or up and coming bands that sound like these?
Thanks in advance, STORNOCK |
Really dig your thrash recs.
Had/have lots of fun with: Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence Exodus - Bonded By Blood Morbid Saint - Spectrum Of Death Sodom - Agent Orange Vio-Lence - Eternal Nightmare The other stuff didn't do much for me, as expected. |

The whole album is an excellent classic, and the demo which came before it is quite good too. Their other stuff is also fairly good, but some of it isn't as raw. I think the album that came after BTA, called; Deep Tracts of Hell, is also quite raw if I remember correctly, but I don't feel like it's as much of a classic. It's still really great, though. Edit: Here's a song from Deep Tracts of Hell. |

Could you recommend anything from thrash/death/black metal focused on groove and rhythm playing style ?
For example in the vein of metallica and obituary respectively.. |

EDIT: Second one is sick. Also, Nails were actually the band that got me into grindcore. Unsilent Death is such a ****ing good record. Big kahuna. EDIT 2: This is brutal: Quote:
EDIT: That was super good, but is it technically poverviolence? Is there something I'm missing? |
My friend recommended it to me just yesterday :) Really cool

Good ole Polish rock.

Not a fan of Neoprog, but they are awesome live. Also got to be backstage afterwards and they are really nice guys. |
Hey guys! This is my first official post on MB. So I have been looking for some new bands to get into. If I said I have been thrash metal binging for the past week and a half what are some of the better known bands besides the big four, exodus, overkill, sepultura, or venom that I should give a try?
Also trying to get into power metal. Any suggestions? |

Appreciate the recommendations. Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Dark Angel, Kreator, and Sodom are probably the best out of the bunch. I still need to listen to the Hammerfell and ElvenKing tracks though. |
But... I didn't rec you any Kamelot. I don't even like Kamelot...

Also I am surprised you don't like Kamelot. |
Too prog for my tastes. Granted, I haven't listened to that much of them, but I can't remember a single moment of being truly engaged while listening to a Kamelot album.

I suggest you give them one more shot. |
Bad Company - Can't Get Enough
|
Good recs so far
|
Could you add more to your interest? Like, compare your interest to any other band;
Made a list of bands, where the further down you go, the more "hard" the music is. (Just a few, don't complain if I'm a little loose on the listing either) Sick Puppies (soft rock) A Day To Remember (basic rock) Bullet For My Valentine (Wouldn't call 100% metal, so they're placed here= Disturbed (Metal) Name any band and I'll find you 5-10 which reminds me of them! :) |

I've been just starting to get into prog metal, and I'm looking for some truly heavy, even brutal prog metal that isn't extreme metal. This is some **** that I dig that is kind of what I'm looking for, but feel free to blow me away with some heavy-as-****-prog-metal with clean vocals.
Shut up. |
Anyone know good death metal with monotone vocals?
Maybe this is what batlord meant by clean--but i can't get into the throaty screeching vocals that much |
