Clean = non-screaming/growling/distorted

If that's what you're looking for, then you're SOL. The vocals are one of the hallmarks of the genre, and that's just how it is.

prisoner437x3y0 12-05-2015 02:24 PM

like im trying to listen to burzum and everything sounds cool--i think they have xylophone in there?

but the vocals take me out of it.

I wish they had some melvins-type monotone over these sounds

Mr.White 12-18-2015 05:05 AM

There was a band out of San Diego called "In Every Breath" I think they've broke up a while ago, but I still rock out to their stuff.

Trollheart 12-18-2015 11:54 AM

Yeah, I've learned to appreciate growls/screams, and if they're not doing that sort of singing, basically it ain't death metal. It's like looking for prog metal without keyboards or avant-garde metal without weird noises. That sort of singing style defines the subgenre.

Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page OBE talks about his incredible career and influences. As well as his encyclopedic knowledge of music he also has an incredible memory about the many sessions he performed for the likes of Van Morrison and Them, The Kinks, The Who and Shirley Bassey.

Jimmy also guides Johnnie through his work with the Yardbirds and his friend Jeff Beck and the initial plans, with John Entwistle and Keith Moon, to form a supergroup that would, in the words of Moon, go down like a lead balloon, with Pete Townshend at least.

Jimmy talks about the infamous concert tours, recent reformation and classic recordings of Led Zeppelin and his friends and co-founders Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones.

BBC Radio 2 - Johnnie Walker Meets..., Jimmy Page

Good listen. Worth 2 hours of your time. :)

Any fans of Solstafir? I love their style and would like to find similar music, particularly to their album "Otta".

Otta was one of the best albums of its year.

Why you asking me? I don't listen to Meat Loaf.

I call myself The Batlord because of this band. Just look at the band logo and it'll all make sense...

^Thanks! Don't know any of those except for Gnaw Their Tongues.
I'll move your post to the metal recommendations thread, as to not derail this one and also because I need practice with that stuff.:)

Mondo Bungle 02-03-2016 04:37 PM

you bitch

jk/

All of Mories (GTT) projects are weird and probably noisy in one way or another along with all the ritual/industrial/ambient/breakcore elements, the second track up there is one. Then there's these

my favorite

greenstone 02-09-2016 09:01 AM

I'm looking for something similar to Tool's first album "Undertow"

Thanks in advance,

Have you looked into King Crimson?
Tool owe very, very much to them.
THRAK, The ConstruKction Of Light and The Power To Believe are their more modern albums with probably the highest similarities to Tool.

oner789 02-20-2016 08:01 PM

The rest of the year looks good also with releases due for Lamb Of God, Iron Maiden, Motorhead and a plethora more, but it will take something special to top this number one entry.

stop_making_sense 02-22-2016 12:08 AM

"Sunn O)))" are super cool

Frownland 02-25-2016 10:53 AM

Really awesome recommendation that I got from mom (mythsofmetal, that is).

lieu 03-02-2016 03:52 AM

Psychofagist, Zu, Kurushimi, and Exiviois all blend jazz and metal really well. Kurushimi is probably the closest to what you're looking for.

I know Zu and they're pretty good so I'll definitely check out the others, thank you!

Tim Grif is pretty good if you like instrumental stuff, both atmospheric and heavy. Could also try MattRach.

Does anyone have any recommendations of symphonic metal?

Trunt 05-08-2016 02:02 AM

Looking for similar music to this

Hey there,

I'm really into this relaxed style of rock but I don't know what it's called so I can't find any more of it without some luck, but have a listen to Mistakes Like This by Prelow (sorry I can't give you a link) and although this may not be rock, the very beginning of For the Team, also by Prelow

Any help is greatly appreciated!

'Carach Angren - Where the Corpses Sink Forever'. Pretty much the only album of its sort where the orchestral component is so perfectly developed.

Good prog metal bands?

I currently listen to Rest Among Ruins, Phinehas, Raunchy, Monuments, and so on. I'm looking for more bands like them as most prog metal is either super soft, slow, or the voice is just bad (in my opinion). Any suggestions?

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-25-2016 07:59 AM

Let me start by saying I'm not really familiar with any of those bands so these might not be what you're looking for, but they're all still prog metal that kicks ass so check em' out.

The obvious one is Mastodon

Devin Townsend is an essential as well imo

These guys are hands down the best modern thrash band imo, and the way they incorporate prog metal elements into their sound is beautiful.

Prog death metal can kick some serious ass at times too, and this stuff is environmentally friendly to boot.

maudlin of the Well are one of the best progressive metal bands around, and their jazzy, avant-garde style is out of this world (astral projection joke.)

And last but not least, Enslaved. One of my favourite black metal bands thanks in large part to the fact they take such a primitive, raw, brutal genre and manage to incorporate a very impressive amount of technical musicianship without allowing their sound to lose it's roots.

Do you know any less known rock-bands that deserves more attention? Spread the word!

I started a new Modern Rock / Cock Rock / Scandinavian Rock Spotify-playlist a couple of days ago, with some more known and less known artists that, in my opinion, just rock, or that I think deserves attention.

If you decide to have a listen... are there any artists or songs that you think are missing from the list? Preferably in the same style or attitude music-wise.
