I know you weren't asking me but I thought I'd give you my input to try the album Fiction first. That got me hooked on Dark Tranquility :)

I would start with "The Gallery" one of the essential early melodic death metal records and then its follow up album "The Minds I" then listen to "Damage Done" probably my favourite Dark Tranquillity album. If you like these then listen to the rest of the stuff. The only album I don`t like is "Projector" as singer Mikael Stanne changed his vocal style to a more operatic baritone style and it sucks.

Graveyard_Diciple 02-28-2010 04:36 AM

thanks for the help guys. the music is great

LoathsomePete 03-01-2010 09:09 AM

If you're getting into melo death metal then definitely check out Hypocrisy. Swedish band from early '90's, started out as your run of the mill death metal band, then kicked out their Satanic vocalist and started focusing their lyrics on the extraterrestrial and the paranormal. Good album to start out with is either Abducted or The Final Chapter.

MaestroImpromptu 03-02-2010 05:21 PM

Yngwie Malmsteen.

If you want crushingly heavy music that retains a good amount of musical sensibility; get "The Red in the Sky is Ours" by At the Gates and "Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious" by Carcass.

Both of these bands were swinging ****s in the melodic death scene, and with later releases both bands sound became much more simplified and melodic. So, the virtue of these earlier releases it they retain a good deal of the inventiveness, technical proficiency, and sheer power that was lost on later releases by these bands and the clones that followed.

Math-Death-Metal-Grind: core.

I have been really into the "core" scene for about the past year and was wondering If you all have any favorites you would recommend in the same vein.
At the moment im really into The Number Twelve LLY, The Red Chord, Destroyer Destroyer, Meandhimcallitus, SYNT, and The Great Redneck Hope.

A lot of Devin Townsend`s stuff is not really traditional metal as such and touches onto prog rock and ambient metal to name just two areas, what type of sound do you like? This may help narrow it down somewhat.

James 03-18-2010 11:43 AM

Well I already like prog rock so maybe thats why I liked it I got his Addicted album and enjoyed it.

I am a huge fan of Strapping Young Lad primarily The New Black. It is a lot heavier than anything off of Addicted though. You should give it a try anyways.

Try groups like Amorphis and Evergrey, these are groups with a lot of prog rock influences and are not really heavy as such and go more for the melodic approach. Opeth are another obvious choice with their traditional prog influences but the earlier stuff falls into more progressive death metal territory! Another obvious choice would be Dream Theater but I`m guessing you probably know them. I also recommend Fates Warning as well, they have a lot of good albums. Also, if you like the symphonic influence then try Symphony X as well.

All of these groups are quite different, meaning that somebody that likes one may not necessarily like the other, so its a case of listen and see. They`re all classified as prog metal which tends to cover a whole host of sounds. With the exception of some of Opeth`s stuff, none are are really heavy and focus more on melody.

Which Amorphis albums are you listening to?

James 03-19-2010 05:35 PM

Just some tracks although I plan on buying an album which would you recommend

TheReverend 03-19-2010 09:10 PM

Hey guys I heard of a band called Symphony X. Good/Bad? I like domination pretty well but I hate wasting money on albums full of crap. Genius on Itunes recommended it, but I find that Genius isnt very useful.

I've been into Symphony X for quite a number of years and they are a very good band. Definetely not a waste of money to get Paradise Lost, The Divine Wings of Tragedy and the rest of them are good as well. If you are into progressive metal such as Dream Theater, I recommend Paradise Lost more.

Start with Elegy and Tuonela in that order and see what you think.

Hammock`s advice is pretty good but my favourite two by them are "Twilight in Olympus" and "V:The New Mythology Suite" A couple of great albums and well recommended. Remember, Symphony X are heavily symphonically influenced, so if you don`t like Symphonic metal you may not like them.

Hey guys, I've been looking to listen to metal more recently as some of my friends really love it. However, the only bands that are metal and I like are Black Sabbath and Primus. So, any recommendations? (I really despise screaming too, I like to understand the lyrics)

Hmm, than I think you can try Pain of Salvation and Riverside. They are mostly progressive rock/metal so not so heavy music and without screaming.

Hehe, I was also against "screaming" but than I found Opeth.... :D And story continues...

Pain of Salvation are really quite soft as far as metal is concerned but offer a huge amount of depth, in fact any progressive metal act could be considered here for Samm, as Black Sabbath and Primus on the face of it are very different (despite the fact that nearly every metal group on the planet has a riff or something from Black Sabbath in their make-up)

Petula07 03-23-2010 06:24 AM

I know it's different... But when somebody needs some "soft metal", I think they are Ok like recommendation.

Samm 03-23-2010 05:25 PM

I liked riverside, Thanks :)
however I looked up path of salvation on last fm and did not find a band

That's because it's Pain of Salvation, not Path of Salvation

Rock is stimulating , stimulation can invoke love but it is stimulation and not peaceful, differences that are okay if it is pure joy and happiness and celebration..

Scissorman 03-30-2010 03:45 AM

It took me a couple reads to figure out how genius this was.

Nice.

Insane Guest 04-01-2010 09:55 PM

Anyone want to give me some GOOD metal bands? I don't want nu-metal. I don't want screaming s***. (I actually want to hear the lyrics.)

I am almost sure you would have some already but Opeth(Damnation) are pretty decent in this regard. Paradise Lost(Gothic) also.

I've heard of them from many people. Never really gave Opeth a try, so what the hell, I'll give them a shot. Any songs or albums in particular?

zeppy111 04-03-2010 09:57 AM

The albums i recommend are in brackets.

Also for Paradise Lost, the song Praise Lamented Shade.

Insane Guest 04-03-2010 09:59 AM

Ah, I didn't see that. Thanks.

Yes, album Damnation by Opeth is really great metal without "screaming" :)
You may like also Remedy Lane by Pain of Salvation.
And The Human Equation or 01011001 by Ayreon.
