I know a few people who honestly say "Whenever I listen to country music, theres a guy singer and theres a girl singer." They aren't being assanine, thats just what they think, and there was a time where I felt the same way. Most country male singers have a voice moving toward baritone. Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Josh Turner. The one country guy most people know was Johnny Cash and he was deep too.

It borders on the absurd sometimes, and Hetfield starts off that deep as well so I imagine that its where you're finding a connection. Beyond that though, I don't really hear the country connotation.

Is there a reason you don't like the genre? Country that is?
I don't think you're coming off as an ******* at all, to be honest. You're raising good conversational debate which is to be expected in this type of thread.

And you answered to my post exactly the way I hoped you would, you gave a good view on what the vocal styling is for country. So yes, that is probably where i'm hearing it with Hetfield, but I can understand how you can't hear it.

I wouldn't say I don't like the genre, it's just not one I listen to regularly enough to give a very good opinion on it. Like any genre, I am sure there is something in Country that I will find and love. I'm very open to it, just isn't one I never really dug deep to find anything. I will happily accept any recommendations if you have any.

Yeah but I'd need to know where you find coutnry music less pleasing. For example, I always thought Country was so self-serious and really obnoxious, as if every lyrics was like "I ****ing ride a tractor and drink beer, and I don't need your fancy liberal cheese to feel like a man, I'm a ****ing american and I'm awesome!"

And that drove me nuts for a million reasons. So when i heard country music that actually made me laugh (intentionally) I could actually enjoy it. Is there something you hate about country? Feel free to PM me and we can start a new thread...

Maybe you're own "Sell Janszoon on the Beatles"

I don't hate anything about it. But to answer your question, your first line is part of why I don't listen to it often, I feel like i'm listening to the same thing.

But a version of "Sell me to Country music" would be a really cool experience. I'll think about that.

Metallica are good but Slayer are better and have been more consistent.

If it weren't for Metallica I don't think the vast majority of people would have never known Slayer even existed.

Can't help it. I saw Slayer in concert a couple of summers ago and I was yawning through most of their set. They're a one trick pony. The trick is pretty cool, super brutal, relentless, heavy, fast, pummeling, and entirely one dimensional - on apparently every single song they've ever composed.

And yeah, I really think if it weren't for Metallica busting open the doors to potential commercial success for thrash metal in the early 80s that the majority of music fans today wouldn't recognize the name Slayer anymore than Budgie. I don't mean that hardcore super metal fans would be unaware, but even my mom knows who Slayer is, and I think that indirect association is directly related to Metallica's commercial success.

I can sort of see where you're coming from here but I don't think it's true. Their sound has actually varied a lot more over the years than people give them credit for. It's just that, in my opinion, the lightning fast style people associate with them is a lot better than the other styles they've used, which is probably why they're sometimes seen as a one trick pony.
