Only 3? I'd assume you'd have said 9.

I'd agree with 3. One Slayer album in particular makes nearly every faves list that is unbefeckinglievably overrated IMO is Seasons in the Abyss. Aside from War Ensemble the songs are well below the quality of any song on Reign In Blood, and the recording quality is just abysmal to my ears. The album that is particularly UNDER rated IMO is their collection of hardcore/punk covers, Undisputed Attitude, an admittedly stupid name for a great collection of covers. The only REALLY bad song on UA is the one original boring boring song that concludes.

Wow, definitely have to agree to disagree on that one. That said, you have perfectly described my feelings about South of Heaven.

For me it's

1. Reign In Blood

2. Hell Awaits (Sometimes I even think this could be my favorite, though)

3. South Of Heaven

4. Show No Mercy

5. Seasons In The Abyss

6. Haunting The Chapel EP

7. World Painted Blood

8. Divine Interventions

Don't really care about the other ones so I won't list them. I think all of the above albums are either good, great or amazing.

And I think Master Of Puppets might be better than all of them except maybe Reign In Blood. Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning and even maybe AJFA could easily be in the top 5 of this list. The top 3 Metallica and top 3 Slayer are very, very close.

Metallica.
All the ****ing way, man.
I dig the hell out of Slayer, especially their earlier work but Metallica just rules. I know they've been given a lot of bad rep for their more recent live shows but that doesn't change how great the music used to be.

I agree with you on Seasons In the Abyss, though I think that the title track is easily one of the best songs they ever did. It's still a damn good album, but it's too much a business-as-usual album. They definitely peaked with Reign In Blood, and nothing since has been anything particularly special.

This is tough but I really think it comes down to variety and in all honesty, Metallica FTW in that department.

Metallica is one of the most varied bands I've ever heard, and the variety found on their albums has been true from their very first album. Their length of their songs is all over the place from the 9:46 ...And Justice For All to the 3:08 Motorbreath.

For Slayer, the variety is...just lacking at some points. South of Heaven was of course different from Hell Awaits and Reign In Blood, but I still consider Show No Mercy to be most the group's most varied (and underrated) album when they were still mingling on the outskirts of high-speed, agressive thrash metal, and the result was a mixture of both.

Going to have to go with Slayer, even though I really like Metallica especially because they're the band that got me into thrash metal in the first place. However, Slayer pretty much took it to the next level with the darker theme that Slayer has with the majority of its songs, which adds a lot to them.

I just straight up don't like Metallica much. I'm not a big thrash fan. On the other hand, there's a decent amount of Slayer tunes I dig.
