I don't think old music>>new music. I think people set standards way too high for new bands these days, with all that pressure of living up to the 'standards' of 'old bands' like King Crimson and Hendrix.

Besides, classic rock (in the broader sense) spans from late 50's-early 90's, whereas modern music spans from late 90's-00's. So obviously 'old music' had more time to develop. I admit the music industry is a bit stagnant and lazy right now, but thats because all the talented bands are too cowardly to be famous.

GREAT band= Talent + Courage. There were heaps of these kinds of bands in 2,3 decades ago.
1991. Definitely Maybe was 94, WTSMG was 95. Even though I wasn't around for the releases, those two albums meant a lot to people my age around that time. They were still releasing albums (all be it they were shit.)

I speak about The Smiths in the same way. I wasn't there for the releases, but you'd think I was with the affection I have for them and the way I talk about them.

"All the talented bands are too cowardly to be famous." - I think there are so many more interesting bands that aren't superstars. With the way music is these days, to appeal to a broad audience you have to be commercial. People who listen to contemporary music don't appreciate real talent, so a band releasing interesting underground music is far better than a band having a load of number ones. Though I see what you're saying, it'd be nice to have both.

I feel Modern music is on par with older music and it's only really had 2 decades to develop decades to develop.

I saw them live last year.

I was faster at moving out of the way.

I'm only really a fan of Kasabian for nostalgic reasons, they're not awful, but 'Empire' was so overplayed that I can't stand the song. They're good to put on a jukebox in a rowdy pub and watch your best friend stamp her feet and shout along to... (or I may be on my own with that one)... Saying that, I did really enjoy seeing them. They put on a fine show.

Generally, the only radio I really listen to are local stations or Radio One (which I'm pretty sure causes a small piece of my soul to die everyday). So anything by Coldplay or Nickleback will start my teeth grinding. 'Sex on Fire' by KOL and 'Don't look back in anger' by Oasis seem to be on an hourly rotation.

'Living on a prayer' by Bon Jovi is played far too much on local stations. There's just no excuse.

Oasis were at their peak more like mid-leaning-toward-late 90s.

Oasis were THE Britpop band. Even if Blur made more interesting music and were all round better musicians etc.

Oasis had the attitude and the bollocks, plus Blur won the battle with the single.. Oasis won the war with the album.

Indeed they were the better. Perhaps I appreciated the fact that they weren't a bunch of miserable c*nts . Or it might have been that I was a Blur fan from 91/92 (my older sister loved them, so I had 'Leisure' and 'Modern life is rubbish' before I even started secondary school), so they were already well established for me by the time Oasis came along. It was a completely different sound and one I didn't particuarly like all that much.

Wasn't really a war with the album - sadly it was a war of Oasis best offering vs one of Blur's weakest

Oh, and add 'Song 2' to the overplayed list. I didn't think it was that great when it came out and I like it even less now. One of Blur's disappointing moments for me...

I always felt Blur made the more innovative creative music, but Oasis made better music. Just because they were 4 lads from Manchester, knowing they aren't Jimi Hendrix but picking up guitars and doing something. Blur were shandy boys from down Landan. Now, I don't listen to either band much. But I do listen to Blur a hell of a lot more, especially 13. I always felt 13 was Blur's strongest album. It was an innovative, creative and generally interesting album. What's your favourite Blur album?

Song 2 was great woman!

Song 2 was a clever parody of grunge rock and it was convincing enough that it appealed to the exact crowd it was mocking.

Lolwut?

I heard it was a song for Pavement's front man, 'cause of his energy... Never ever heard anything of the sort that it was some kind of parody. Where has that come from? I can see it being true now you mention it. Why were they taking the piss out of Grunge? Grunge vs Brit Pop... Meh.

Hmmm. That's actually really difficult for me. It's between 'Modern life is Rubbish' and '13'. 'Leisure' was a bit Madchester, MLIR seemed to be a more comfortable album for them. But, then again, 'Parklife', as overplayed as it is does have some enormously fantastic tracks on it too... Sigh. Decision making is not my strong point.

Song 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The song was meant to be a parody of American grunge music. Ironically however, it was embraced by the same radio stations whose airplay choices the song was parodying in the first place."

I appreciated the concept of 'Song 2'. Just didn't think it was that great. Though with that whole album they were going in a slightly different direction, which luckily worked (God bless you Graham Coxon).

Anyway...
