Honestly, I've stumbled upon a few 'apparently' Christian rock / metal bands over the years, and while the occasional band has seemed solid and well put together, I would say the the quality of the recording/production is most often what separates it from regular music for me..
As a recording engineer I find it hard to listen to stuff that just isn't quite up to par... Although it's hard to be too hard on them.. there simply can't be the same amount of money in the budgets for most of them..
