They went downhill, and quickly, after "Arise".
I think they went downhill after Beneath The Remains. They seemed to cater for a mass audience after that album and lost their identity.

I love Arise as much as I love BTR. Both albums are great in their own way. Still the best 2 Sepultura albums. I like "Chaos A.D.", I like some of the tribal elements. Had a lift in production, songwriting and some interesting tribal moments. I think that was the last album I really liked. I am in the camp too that thinks "Roots" is overrated. It was like Chaos, but with almost none of the Thrash influences that could still be found on Chaos. Bores me fast, run time is too long, and many of the tracks are just skippable to me.

Arise is still a worthy follow up to BTR though.

^ I agree with most of what you say, but I got a little more love for Roots than you. They did slow down and simply, but they also down-tuned and got heavier/groovier which was cool with me. The one and a half tracks of ambiance is definitely skip-able, though.

Why not this for the best metal album of all time?

Yeah, that I agree with. But aside from that Roots is great. As with Chaos A.D. it's the percussion and the groove of the songs that make it great.

I only have In Battle There Is No Law! and The IVth Crusade, but I like both quite a bit. I may have to check that one out.

But the below is metal.. & it's not prog.

Aw, okay. I've never heard Sepultura before. Heard of them, just never heard 'em. I have to agree, though, that now that I've listened a little they definitely are/sound like groove metal. I've read somewhere, on this forum probably, that Pantera are groove metal. I'd have to say that that Roots album, so far, is a lot more groovy, for lackthereof a better, less kindly word, than Pantera. But I am never good at labeling things. I used to classify AC/DC as metal. Have a friend who still does.

Bolt Thrower gets unfairly maligned for recording the same album over and over, but those two records prove detractors, wrong. IBTINL is a grindcore album, "Crusade" is doomy death metal. 'Realm of Chaos" followed IBTINL, and retains a lot of it's chaotic blasts, while also moving into death metal and better production.

What.

Eh I guess I'll go with Cowboys From Hell.

Though Vulgar Display of Power comes real close.

"The IVth Crusade" is my favorite album by them, followed by "War Master". They are great at that slow paced Death Metal. Them and Cianide are 2 of my favorites in that department.

I know this has already been said, but seriously, I have to say something.

What?

What?!

This is literally the most insane thing I have read in a long while. I'm sorry, but this is just crazy. Just... ugh.
