But the variety is dull and doesn't really mesh. It's like a black metal Opeth, but with folk instead of prog. Just combining two genres for the sake of sounding different rather than because they actually work together.

yeah but are you even a folk metal fan? I think it's great. Folk notwithstanding, the metal is god tier

They go together quite well imo. I think you just don't like folk from what it sounds like.

This is a weird sentence for me.

I'm not a big folk fan, but I do like the odd folk thing, but that's not really the point. It just sounds like two arbitrary styles mashed together for the sake of mashing two arbitrary styles together. I actually like the folk aspect more than the black metal sound on that record tbh, I just don't think they mesh organically.

I could see it being arbitrary when it comes to a couple of acoustic interludes from the album, but I still think you just don't like folk because they work well. Well as ****.

It also helps that I am very hit or miss with Norwegian black metal. Honestly I think the style is highly overrated. Like I said, I actually rather like the folk sections -- I guess they feel like folk from the perspective of metal fans or something -- but the black metal parts are kind of boring, and how they interact with the folk parts just feels forced.

love this album so far, Death Metal/Goregrind with a hint of Punk influence. Plus, an ode to Slasher films of the 70s and 80s... things I love all around.

This song is better than everything the Scorpions released in the 80s combined. The rhythm guitar is genius, and the way the solo at the beginning just dances over it is the absolute ****. "Playful" is generally not a descriptor I'd give to a metal song, and especially one that takes itself seriously, but it fits perfectly.

^ One of their best songs for sure. There's a joke in there somewhere that Scorpions and Journey both started off as proto-metal, almost-prog bands before the 80's gave them big hair.

On another note, came across this re-issue of a one shot 1990 power metal / prog metal album from Recon. They're basically Queensryche circa The Warning meets Stryper's hard on for Jesus Christ. The vocalist sounds exactly like Geoff Tate. Amazing.
