Though I must admit, I respect both artists for developing and evolving their sound instead of sticking with the same recipe album in and album out.
Well I suppose the purpose of a single (not a 100% sure what the links provides is indeed a single) is to draw as many people into the new album as possible, so naturally a single would be the most palatable song that the album has to offer. Some of the prog passages found on Watershed were insane and yet melded together seamlessly. Death growls or not, I'm expecting excellence on the upcoming album. Now when it comes to Mastodon, I can understand how Brent's voice wouldn't appeal to everyone but the harmonies provided by Brann and Bill are like a breath of fresh air in modern metal. Can't say I wouldn't mind hearing some of the old vocal grit on Mastodon's new album though either.

But this isn't the first time they've done an album with 100% clean vocals, I mean just listen to Damnation (2003), it's got clean vocals and like... no distortion at all, it's a progressive rock album. In fact Opeth have slowly been leaning towards this sound for the last 8 years, I mean the last really heavy album by them was Deliverance (2002), Ghost Reveries (2006) and Watershed (2008) had their heavy moments but nothing compared to their material from 1995-2002.

I don't know a whole lot about Opeth so I'll have to look into this...

Called it with a proggier album and softer vocals.

It really sucks that they are going another clean vocal album, it's a shame because Mikael is so ****ing amazing at growls!

They shouldn`t have spent so much time with Steve Wilson, I now see him as a bad influence on that band.

Judging by the new single the band seem to be going for a softer but more progressive sound, even the guitars don't sound as heavy as they did on Ghost Reveries and Watershed. But you can trace the evolution in their sound over the last few albums and this album will bring them even closer to prog rock. The vocals sound good enough though, I thought they would sound a bit cheesy but they managed to keep far enough away from cheesiness, if you want growls you can always listen to their previous albums I guess. Going to have to listen to the song a couple of more times to decide whether the whole album is going to be worth a listen. Watershed was good but I never really felt the urge to listen to it that often so I don't know what this album is going to be like.

Yeah, he is making them way more prog. I wouldn't be surprised if he is the one responsible for their heads on the album cover.

And it's not too much of a problem with the vocals, I'll just go listen to Bloodbath if I want my brutal fix. Fucking excited to see them with Katatonia, only 2 more months!!!

Now THAT would be a great show. I know Akerfeldt did some recording with them in the 90's and it would be cool if they somehow merged together on stage and played some old tracks.
