Doing my research like a good girl who knows a little about bday presents, I have learnt that Canada is the birthplace of RUSH, renound as one of the top classic Rock bands, not only that but containing one of boyfriend's best loved drummers... Neil Peart.

He has none of their records. I want to get an LP for him. Know nothing about LPs.

To cut a long story short I have no idea where to go from here. Which LP do people in the know think is the finest representation of rock and drumming? I gather that Moving Pictures, Hemispheres and A Farewell to Kings seems to be battling for top place... I've found 2 "collector" LPs of Hemispheres, one is a picture disc one is red vinyl... (?) for $25 and $20 respectively...

Shall I just chuck in the towel and get a DVD!

Need some guidance from people in the know... Rock lovers help please? :o)

Wow... that is a tough one. Anything Rush would make him happy, but if he is a drummer, I would recommend getting him a live DVD. I have been very pleased with RUSH IN RIO, which not only features a plethora of songs from every part of their career, but the musicianship is fantastic.

As for albums, the special vinyl would be a treat. They aren't things that you can get any old place. And picture discs are a work of art. Most of the time, anyhow.

Oh, now for MY opinion of Rush. I absolutely LOVE everything from "A Farewell To Kings" up through "Hold Your Fire". There were bits and pieces that I loved from them, once they switched over to Atlantic Records, but I always felt those albums from 1976-1987 were some of the strongest, although very different in style.

JacobsLadder 09-09-2009 02:51 PM

Alright, Rush, best band ever?

Obviously they are, but anyone with reasons why other bands might be better?

Nope, I think you pretty much summed it up. Rush PWNz everyone else who has ever player music.

JacobsLadder 09-09-2009 03:52 PM

That post was supposed to be an inflammatory thread.

I just died a little bit inside.

kintakmagic 09-21-2009 09:11 PM

rush is one of the best bands with three of the most talented rock musicians ever.
how could you not love rush?

snagglepuss 09-23-2009 09:34 AM

A strange choice of best songs.

Another Rush lover chiming in. Geddy Lee has one of the most distinctive voices in rock, it has to grow on you. My fav song is Working Man.

JacobsLadder 10-08-2009 11:45 AM

Just listened to "Turn the Page" really loud. Holy ****.

Aragn Ramone 10-31-2009 11:28 PM

Rush is amazing! Neil Peart is one of my favorites drummers.

Rush makes me think about all the things in universe, is really incredible.

PingPong 11-19-2009 12:58 AM

Yep, I agree. Love Rush, favourite album is Hemisphere's.

Captain Awesome 12-15-2009 01:42 PM

Think you`ll find that most music buffs and rock enthusiasts love this group (they are very popular on these boards) Rush are the kind of group that you listen to, to really get into rock music:laughing: They`re popular for their superb technical ability, complex songwriting, shifting styles and even their dodgy lyrics:laughing:

The Rush Albums to have are: Moving Pictures, 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Grace Under Pressure, Permanent Waves in that order, plus a whole load of excellent live material.

Each person has the fav in the group and Geddy Lee was always mine with his unique voice and big bass lines.

jackhammer 12-15-2009 05:46 PM

I recently ran through my Rush collection and promptly deleted all the 70's stuff I had by them. I'm a big fan of Moving Pictures through to some stuff off Hold Your Fire. not really what diehard Rush fans want to hear but their 70's stuff bores the arse off me.

Even stuff like Fly By Night, Anthem or Working Man? Oh damn. I've always liked Lee's voice on Fly by Night and lets face it, Anthem and Working Man are pretty damn cool too. And then the stuff like Farewell to Kings and 2012?

Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures started the trend away from their traditional prog sound of the time and more of an emphasis towards shorter songs in general and the greater use of keyboards. It wasn`t until "Signals" released in 1982 with the brilliant lead single "Sudbivisions" that the group were putting out a more rock/pop (power pop) centric sound and I suppose "Grace Under Pressure" is their definitive power pop release. "Power Windows" is also a good album despite the terrible single "The Big Money" but don`t agree with "Hold Your Fire" as I always thought this a much weaker effort.

To show how poppy this band had become, Alex Lifeson in this era looked more like a member of Spandau Ballet than a rock band:laughing:

Yea, I never liked that change of style. For me, they peaked about halfway through Moving Pictures. I agree they released a lot of quality material, I even like their early stuff like "Working Man" quite a bit.

dtx21 12-25-2009 01:47 PM

Geddy Lee is a wonder man of sorts.
He plays bass.
Sings.
AND plays keyboard.
SOMETIMES, all at the same time.
So take that piece of information and eat it, PUDDIN!

Hold Your Fire is pretty poor I guess but Open Secrets is a great track.

duga 12-30-2009 03:56 PM

I actually thought their latest album was pretty solid...but yes the days of the pure genius of Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves seems to be over. I will still see them live any day. Favorite album by them is A Farewell to Kings.

Rush is one of the few bands in which every member is a frickin virtuoso. Alex Lifeson isn't really recognized as much since Geddy and Neil are so amazing, but he is right up there in the uniqueness of his chord progressions. His stuff is actually quite challenging to play...and I still warm up on guitar by playing through the Trees to this day.

Lisa Nicole 12-30-2009 06:55 PM

I met rush almost 10 years ago while visiting LA. Which was ironic, considering I went to the same school Getty did... course... I am MUCH younger. *ahem*

Neil wasn't there... he's always been a bit fussy.

jackhammer 12-30-2009 07:03 PM

U mean Geddy?

Flyingpig437 05-08-2010 11:35 AM

I've become a bit obssesed with Rush during the last week. I've never heard a voice like Geddy's. It's like a high-pitched tuneful squeaky shout.

I remember feeling the same way back in the 70s, wow...I cant believe that was 30+ years ago! I just cant imagine a life of playing my own music like these guys have done, along with alot of other artist, for so many years. 2112 was a landmark album that really defined that era of rock, the song was a story....15 to 20 minutes long. As so did other bands like Yes, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, etc. I think rock music had progressed to a stage in that era, of 'perfection'. Rock, Opera, Classical,....song arrangement along with the level of talent in those days was simply outstanding.

duga 05-08-2010 02:18 PM

Yeah, totally...and you know what else is really cool...my awesome review of the discography....*cough*signature*cough*

With the exception of "Counterparts" this is classic era Rush, also check out "Moving Pictures" and "A Farewell to Kings" The best two Rush albums along with 2112.

debaserr 07-18-2010 10:56 PM

I'd recommend the live album Exit Stage Left. In a lot of ways I think it's my favorite album by them.

gunnels 07-18-2010 11:03 PM

Yeah, Exit pretty much takes the best of pre-signals Rush and makes it better.

debaserr 07-18-2010 11:04 PM

thanks a bunch. it has most of the essential tracks you would say?

To be fair, you`ve pretty much got the three essential album as far as most Rush fans are concerned. The only one you`re lacking is "2112" and possibly "Permanent Waves" If you`re into their 1980`s more synth driven style then "Grace Under Pressure" is the pick.

As far as their live albums go, I actually prefer "All The Worlds A Stage" over the Exit live album and it was recored after 2112 and has a lot of their earlier stuff on it.

Dimebagdaryl 07-19-2010 02:42 AM

i cant wait Rush will be playing the MN state fair in august gonna be awesome

Shampoo 07-20-2010 08:20 PM

I especially love Rush's 70s albums. Hemispheres is my favorite.

I have no idea which song is from which album, but what I always liked about Rush is the time signature changes they have in their songs, since these changes keep me wondering about what will happen next.

Raust 07-22-2010 07:01 PM

Rush is a pretty sweet band. Very overlooked imo @ my old high school there was pretty much just this one kid and me who liked them. Moving Pictures is pretty amzing.
