I honestly don't even find GNR to be fun. There was a time as a teen where I did, but I quickly got bored of them and only now give a **** about "Sweet Child 'O Mine". "Paradise City" and "Welcome to the Jungle" do nothing for me these days, and everything else I've heard from them are just kind of somewhat okay to tedious. I don't hate them like I do Pink Floyd, but I consider my indifference to them to be in the same ballpark. Everything that made them different from the bog standard bands of their ilk also served to make them less fun.

So anyway they moved away from all the trite gimmicks of 80s Metal Glam but still kept some of the affectations of proto 80s Metal Glam like Aerosmith. GnR are the missing link in the evolution between 80s Metal Glam and 90s Metal and Hard Rock. GnR vs Grunge is an apples to oranges comparison. Grunge was more of the amalgamation of Punk and 80s college radio while GnR was the amalgamation of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock.

GnR were OK. Their popular songs were good enough, idk about their whole albums. But what really catapult them into being a household name were their concert shirts.
Nah they're clearly glam. If they weren't completely derivative it says less about GNR than it does about just how ****ing derivative glam was. If glam metal had any real identity beyond a handful of bands then GNR would have just been another glam band and not had their dicks ridden so hard. Having different ideas does not separate you from your genre, it just makes you standout from the bands in your genre. Maybe you could separate their later material from glam, but they were definitely a glam band who just had more creativity than Poison.

But I just don't give even a little bit of a **** about their creativity. I'd much rather listen to Poison btw.

strangest thing, last week i was trying to explain to my friends why they're ****ing retarded for calling Led Zeppelin the greatest band of all-time when suddenly someone said "obviously the best band is GNR!"

it took me like 10 minutes and 3 songs to get everyone to agree that the Crue > Chulacore any day of the week.

So many ****ing hugs. And you even got everyone to agree cause of course they would agree when put to the sword as to how many Crue songs they liked over GNR songs. Who here has read The Dirt btw? One of my favorite books ever, and I even love it better as a music book than Lords of Chaos, which is also one of my favorite books.

Those aren't your real friends.

Ouch.

Whenever there's a crackertastic music fest around here, my coworkers always ask me if I'm going to them because they heard I like concerts. One was genuinely shocked that I didn't want to see Smash Mouth a couple of weeks ago.

we're also having an ongoing debate on whether eminem is one of the best lyricists of all-time or not

*rolls eyes back into head until they detach and roll across the floor*

seriously though i have like two friends who i can actually talk music to without getting angry. it's like a prerequisite around here that if you want to like good music you also need to be annoying and snobby. so rather than be friends with other annoying snobs, i just choose to be the lone annoying snob.

Why? I mean it's not like they're invested enough in the subject if they just stopped at the third artist they heard.

I like to make snobs feel humble.

I'm just going to assume that none of them even knew who Drive Like Jehu or Shellac were or else I'd diss and dismiss them. Even if they had I'd visibly sneer at them. So basically they're not your friends anymore right?

I mean I love Eminem and his lyrics, but I still understand that they're good for fun's sake and not because they're accomplished, and I'm a lyrical dunce. I don't even know if he's better on a subtler, technical level, but I still know that he's mostly good for his nonsense than he is for his brilliance. At the very least I'd refrain from putting forth an opinion due to my ignorance rather than put my ignorance out into the world and pretend it was meaningful.
