i've been having this dream on the nights your body keeps my eyes open. I live in a sprawling cloud of expensive cigarette smoke. your voice rings like loose change when you curse god. I dream i wrap my lips and hands around your cracking throat, trying to keep the secrets in. I don't want to hear your demons pray. the air is shaking around us, the bed is sinking into the floor. there is a symphony of apologies playing in my ear. the sun hangs by a thread, clinging to a foreign sky.

your lips are swollen, filled with all words you can't define. you are tearing at the edges, you've never had any peace in your mind. i'll write up another list of damages done and fix you another drink. this bottle is all we have tonight, and i can see it broken, reflected in your unlit eyes. we are growing up dead in a living man's world, our dreams are mere conversation starters. we've just gotta wear our sweaters out more, get warm again. i'm losing my mind, leaving it behind.
