These should do nicely...forgot about this thread for a while. Think I'll make a compilation soon.

OK guys, this is damn hard but let me see if I can pick out, and waffle on about (never hard for me!) my favourite ten songs.
At the moment.
With probably additions or changes later.
Maybe.
Or maybe not.
Anyway...

http://www.mediafire.com/file/lhyntajkjlg/Mixtape.rar

1. Angel (Sarah MacLachlan)
What can I say about this song? It lifts me up, drags me down; it's so bittersweet, desolate yet hopeful, sung with simple grace by Sarah with nothing more than a piano for backing, and my god it works! Quite honestly one of the most beautiful, powerful and moving lovesongs I have ever heard.
In.My.Life.

2. The reason (Hoobastank)
I saw the video for this on telly and just loved it. It's an aching, powerful lovesong (again, sorry most of these are), with powerful, almost angry guitar and gut-wrenching emotion. I'm told that the rest of the music the band makes is nothing like this, which makes it all the more special.

3. Jilted John (Jilted John)
Once in a while a punk song comes along that you just can't ignore. I HATE Punk rock (sorry, but I do), but this is just SO FUNNY! I don't think it was intended as a comic song, but it really is. It's so bad it's not just good, it's legendary, complete with naff English accent. A true classic! With lyrical gems like "I was so upset that I cried / All the way to the chip shop" you just know you're in for a treat! Always puts a smile on my face.

4. The island (Paul Brady)
One of Ireland's overlooked talents, Paul Brady has been plying his trade for years and is respected not only in rock, but folk and trad (traditional Irish) circles too. This is from his "Back to the centre" album, one of the most poignant and powerful ant-war songs I have heard ever, also managing to be a quite beautiful love song at the same time. Real genius.

5. Comfortably numb (Pink Floyd)
Who can argue with this? It'd be worth including just for Gilmour's amazing guitar outro, but a fantastic song in its own right, and one of my favourites from the Floyd.

6. Who wants to live forever (Queen)
Haunting, ethereal theme from "Highlander", one of my favourite Queen songs. Rather poignant given Freddie's untimely and lamented death.

7. No bravery (James Blunt)
Yeah, yeah, I know you all hate him, but give the guy a chance! He wrote more than "You're beautiful", you know! This is a powerful, damning indictment of the Iraq war, and never fails to send a shudder down my spine and a tear trickling down my cheek...

8. Hallelujah (Jeff Buckey)
Perhaps (no, screw that) THE best version of Leonard Cohen's oft-covered and oft-maligned (who said X Factor??) classic, stripped down to its basics by the late Jeff, haunting and eerie, soulful and emotive, the way the song was meant to be played, and heard! RIP Jeff.

9. Broken bicycles (Tom Waits)
From his rather good collaboration with Crystal ***le on "One from the heart", one of Waits's most striking pieces, a reflective, introspective ballad of things lost and abandoned, like "old broken bicycles out in the rain". One of my all-time favourite Waits songs.

10. One (U2)
A powerful song of peace and reconcilliation, in a world and for a world for which there is unlikely ever to be such. Bono sings from the heart, like him or loathe him, and this is a moving, uplifting song, with darker overtones. Sung the way it should be, no Mary J. Blige in sight!

That's it then. You probably all hate my choices, but I'm confortable with them...!
Any form of discussion or human contact encouraged...

get some sugar

Melodies, harmonies, hooks, redundant production techniques. These are the things we take for granted in our endless pursuit of eclecticism and new musical frontiers... However I am under a cloud and I thought the best way to counter this would be to make an indie-pop compilation with a nonsensical title!

Included within is: a lot of the new, smatterings of the old, American, British, German, Japanese, girls, boys, twee, not-so-twee, shoegazey, baggy, lounge (?) - it's all here and it's all you need!
A bit too pleasant at times for my liking, but otherwise, a refreshing change from all the crap I've been listening to lol. Burning The Thoughts From My Skin and Welcome were my favorites from the lot. I'm not all that familiar with 'c86' (still haven't listened to that comp. yet!), so this does shed some light...although I would love to hear that 'weird side' . Now, onto the next one...

Here's a random compilation I just made. I really didn't know what to do on, and went with "non-english" vocals/lyrics I seem to enjoy. Hehe, don't worry, none of it is too obscure/hard to get into. Don't ask for any translations as anything other than Italian/French is just too much of a stretch for me to even try and understand. I've been using online translators myself although they do seem to get the worst when it comes to Asian languages

1. Quella Vecchia Locanda - Un Giorno, Un Amico
Decided to put some Italian prog. to start it off. Not goona pester you with too much of vocals, as they come in only later in the song.

2. The Plastic People of the Universe - Constipation
A band from the Czech Republic who were influenced by Zappa quite a bit and it definitely shows here. Their music is really dark-psychedelic. The quality isn't the best here, but well, it was ripped by me and finding a better rip online isn't easy.

3. 東京事変 (Tokyo Jihen) - 秘密
Led by Japanese popstar Shiina Ringo, they had an eclectic mix of Jazz and Japanese-pop. She sure does know to sing.

4. 椎名林檎 (Shiina Ringo) - 宗教
And while we are on the topic of Shiina Ringo, lets go to her solo recordings. She mixes Japanese pop, noise, classical...even electronic bits effortlessly. Calling her simply 'pop' just doesn't suit her music.

5. Dolores Delirio - Aprendizaje
The Peruvian version of The Cure/Joy Division.

6. АукцЫон - День Победы
These Russians are way too cool...they keep changing their sound after every release. This is one of their jazzier bits, Russian style .

7. Peter King - Shango
The funk of Africa! Similar to Fela Kuti.

8. Amadou & Mariam - Mon Amour, Ma Cherie
I don't know, but everything from Africa seems to have this rhythm and groove one could immediately relate to. This is some of the more bluesy stuff.

9. Osamu Kitajima - Track 1(??)
I've got almost all his recording, but god, it's so messed up atm. Anyways, it's a great mix of ethnic Asian music and Psychedelia. Sounds weird, but he sure does know to play the guitar.

10. Lhasa - Los Peces
She has a wonderful voice, but what makes the music even better are the arrangements. She sings in spanish and her influences range from Mexican/latin music to American folk to eastern European folk. Too bad, I don't understand a word .

Get it here!!!
