Deadly Fires Sweep Portugal and Northern Spain

Allegedly arson. Their leader has referred to it as a terrorist act, but I'm not sure if he means that or if he's just calling arson of this scale terrorism in itself.

We were very very lucky. I kept hearing 200,000 people without power, then later 300,000, at one point 385,000, and I kept thinking "****! We're next!" But it stayed on thank the great Pixie in the sky!

Edit: Officially it's gone now, ****ed off to Scotland. Check the "Your Day" thread for pics and vids.

Lisnaholic 10-16-2017 05:10 PM

Good to hear that TH is ok.
Most UK cities have their local elec supply cables underground I think, so not so vulnerable to wind damage. Elec cables on posts is prob one reason why Puerto Rico still has v little power.

OccultHawk 10-16-2017 05:22 PM

Yeah the infrastructure is worse but that storm was far more powerful

Trollheart 10-16-2017 05:30 PM

Yep. Mostly it was trees taking down the power lines. Not quite sure what their beef is with the power lines, but once a tree takes a dislike to you, ****ing suicide bombers have nothing on them!

I will say, our weather service were on top of it from middle of last week, giving all the details and pretty much called it almost exactly, like they could almost say hour to hour what counties would be affected. The joint task force did its job really well too. I hesitate to commend the govt but damn they done good.

A few people in Ireland felt, and saw, windows passing today! And doors, and roofs and trees...

That heavy wind we recently had destroyed our fence and I lost a shirt that was hanging outside. Actually nearly lost pants/socks but luckily they just fell on the ground and stayed there.

The same thing would've happened to me many times over the years if I didn't have A ****ING DRYER!

dryers are too hard on your clothes. hanging them outside is the way to go.

Thats what fabric softener was created for.

Tumble dryers shrink clothing.

90% of clothing will have a label on it telling you that you can't put it in the dryer.

Worst thing to put in them is polo shirts.

glad somebody gets it. you're not supposed to put jeans in there either unless you take them out while still damp.

That's why you buy a size bigger than you need. This is like American 101.

I know this, but that's more about the studs that hold them together, and they can wreck the drum of the machine. I just throw my (mom) jeans over the rad. We don't actually have enough room in what's left of the garden now for a washing line, but I live in Ireland as you know, so **** checking every five minutes for rain, dashing out, waiting ten minutes, hang them back out, wait again, rinse and repeat. Two hours in the tumbler and they're done. Also, with Karen's situation I have normally one to two washing machine loads to dry per day, so again, **** washing lines.

'Go to the dentist and get fined £100' - BBC News

Unbelievable. Like anyone wants to go to the dentist in the first place! Those crazy Brits!

OccultHawk 10-18-2017 04:48 PM

So in the U.K. you can go to the dentist and the most you'll pay is 100 pounds?

fucking paradise.

America should adopt this fining system.

Are you two retarded? It's a FINE not a reward! It's levied on people - or it's supposed to be - who abuse the system by trying to get their dental work done for free, as in, on the National Health. How is that "paying for your dentistry"?

Call it a fine or a charge or whatever. It cost them 100 pounds to go to the dentist. I wish I could go to the dentist.

You don't need to get all pissed about it. I mean, I don't have the means for dental care and no way to get around it. Shouldn't I be the one who's pissed?

We're just foaming at the mouth for not having to fill out a mortgage to have our cavities filled. Forgive us our nirvana. We're Americans.

I'm not pissed. I just don't understand how you think a fine is rewarding someone? Anyway, the National Health only applies if you qualify (OAP, disabled, out of work etc) which is kind of the point. I have no idea how much dental procedures cost, as I cannot enter a dentist's surgeon without bursting into flame. So I stay away.

I haven't been to a dentist since I was a small child. I honestly don't even know how I still have all my teeth in my head and I kind of doubt that I still will when I'm 40. I'm legit thinking of asking for a dental visit for Christmas no lie and the sheer fact that I can even ask for that is kind of a miracle for one such as I.
