President Trump and his allies are celebrating the end of his impeachment trial and slamming the one Republican who voted to remove him from office. The vote acquitting Trump of both impeachment charges was along party lines except for Senator Mitt Romney, who voted “guilty” on abuse of power. Nancy Cordes is on Capitol Hill where she covered the entire impeachment process.

America was founded on a genocide, built through a holocaust, has led the world in environmental destruction, and is the greatest existential threat to humanity the world has ever known. Unlike Germany which has a culture that has a earned a place in the world through many centuries America has no justification for its existence. As a foreign person (to us) it’s kind of you to think maybe something worthy of existence could grow from our ashes but if it ever happens... no thanks.

The Batlord 02-06-2020 04:27 PM

And nothing America's checkered past has brought to the table will ever be as awesome as Hitler.

Anteater 02-06-2020 06:35 PM

Well, I love movies, the Internet, AOR and jazz, so God Bless America.

The Batlord 02-06-2020 06:50 PM

Also: **** Merkel.
Also: I don't know which "you" you are talking about. My Jewish ancestors in Ukraine sure didn't elect Hitler.

eh... Your ancestors might not have supported him but they inspired others to. It's time you take your fair share of responsibility.

jwb 02-06-2020 07:50 PM

Also I'm done crying over the Indians. Those slackers were wasting a perfectly good continent.

The Batlord 02-06-2020 08:17 PM

And now we're using it to waste a perfectly good world. Weak minded white trash.

Inspired, shminspired... People get awfully bitchy about a few poisoned wells and ritually sacrificed Christian babies.

Also 90+ % of Indians died off from disease.

Lisnaholic 02-07-2020 05:31 AM

I'd say that, like many countries, America, despite its faults, has a lot to be proud of. Not sure that Anteater has done an accurate job though:-

movies - came out of France with the Lumiére Bros and Georges Méliés
Internet - usually credited to this guy, though as befits the invention itself, many countries contributed to the prelim developments that made it possible:-

Quote:

Research at CERN in Switzerland by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989-90 resulted in the World Wide Web, linking hypertext documents into an information system, accessible from any node on the network
but jazz, yes, blues, yes, rock'n'roll, yes.

Outside of music, one of America's virtues is the ability to throw money and resources at something. To me they deserve credit for helping out the Brits in WWII and then rebuilding Europe with The Marshall Plan. Plus the whole man-on-the-moon thing, which was a spectacular milestone, even if it didn't produce much obvious benefit.

^ Nice bit of victim-blaming, jwb! You forgot to post about how rape victims are asking for it.

They did. Then they left. Seemed like the smart decision at the time I'm sure.

Lol stop being a little bitch. Circumstances aside, America still birthed jazz. As in, it wouldn't exist today without those circumstances. Did Europe or any other country have a jazz tradition before the U.S.? No.

I missed an obvious one a few pages back too - electricity. America <3

^ Well, not in a list of things America can take some pride in, no. In an analysis of how art can grow out of atrocity, yes.

^ Not sure how to respond to "Yikes" as a debating point, elph! Luckily, I'm off to work now, so don't have to explore the morality of the Marshall Plan, which tbh, I don't know much about apart from what they told me in High School. :shycouch:

worthy of an asterisk

No, but it's pointless whining about what you are talking about when you have centuries of history prior to America where civilizations were built on the oppression, enslavement, whatever of whoever happened to be there before. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Does Rome ring any bells? How about the Mongols? Domestically, the Aztecs and Mayan civilizations were into some bad **** as well. Are those cultures devoid of merit despite the millions that suffered?

If you want something practical out of this, I'd recommend appreciating the fact that if diversity didn't matter in America, you wouldn't have multi-billion dollar companies and organizations pushing messages about toxic masculinity, the "evils of white nationalism", lots of imagery of mixed race couples, etc. into the mainstream or making Colin Kaepernick the face of an ad campaign that spent millions upon millions to reach a lot of people. Going by all that, I'd say diversity and the desire to perpetuate it is alive and well.
