Surely they've got to be on the same level. Surely nobody would think torture is a lesser crime than rape. Both are horrific obviously, but if we look at the sentencing each crime brings by law, torture is considered more severe in the eyes of the law. So surely, in the rules that uphold how we behave, what is marked as more severe there, surely should apply to our moral ranking of its severity also?
I completely agree with this.

Did you guys know that animals having sex with each other is vicious, sometimes painful and often not consenting?

For example, male cats have barbs on their penises which causes incredible pain for the female (or male) cat during intercourse.

I don't think you contradicted yourself, you just don't have any logical explanation for your beliefs on the subject. That's just how you feel, it doesn't have to make logical sense.

Not that I appreciate or agree with using the latter sentence as an excuse/reason, but I do at least recognize it.

Some people try to use logical reason to define morality rather than accepting natural tendencies/bias.

There's a place for logic and it's perhaps only incredibly rarely at the end of a moral question.

That's baffling to me. Morality basically defines us as human beings and it's the one thing that most people are not inclined to be logical about.

I'm not singling you out. I know I am in the minority when it comes to this way of thinking(you should have seen some of the stares I got in my college philosophy/ethics classes).

I'm probably getting ahead of myself here, I'm basically a high school dropout... but what's so baffling about moral answers to moral questions?

Incoming potential complete derailment of thread.

That people justify their moral answers without logic. Feeling a certain way about something just because you feel that way is not logical, it's emotional.

Education is overrated when it comes to crafting an intelligent argument.

For me, yes. I'm a fan of logic.

I didn't say it was bad for you or anyone else. I just happen to think it's a stupid way to approach defining a system of rights and wrongs and living one's life.

I don't get how you can use logic to define a system of rights and wrongs that vary from person to person.

You can do that to define your own moral position but not the position of others.

I was talking about myself but I think others should also use logic to define their own sense of morality, which this thread(and life experience) demonstrates is clearly not the case.
