Progressive Rock specifically, yes, it can be underrated.

Pretty much. It'd be interesting to hear bands like Yes, King Crimson, and any others play or record an album without a keyboard player. I don't want to imagine that it'd sound better, I can only imagine that they'd sound much worse.

I suppose I worded it a bit weird, but you basically know what i'm getting at. I just don't see a lot of discussion in general about someone saying like "oh man, this band is great because this guy is great on the keys". Most of the time it's focused on the vocalist or the guitarist. Granted, I do know a lot of people who worship the ground Rick Wakeman walks on, but I still stick by my opinion.

I think it's more likely that keyboards are underrated in general and receive too much flak because of the association with cheese if that's your angle.

That actually makes a lot of sense now that you say that. I've always found people saying they find the use of keyboard to be really cheesy especially in newer progressive rock bands. Never really understood why, but I guess that's why I have the opinion that I do.

Around the time Pogo's role in the band became minimized, the albums started selling less, although the general public becoming tired and bored of Manson's shock antics probably had a lot to do with that as well.

But it definitely didn't help that the keyboarding became less and less inportant, resulting in a much softer sound that was in complete contrast with the bands output a decade prior.

However, I would argue that Manson's music has become much more mature and organic sounding in his most recent albums, due to a greater focus on raw guitar and bass rather than keyboards and electronics. So I suppose it's a trade off in the long run.

King Crimson haven't really used keyboards since the seventies.

My opinion has nothing to do with time.

Old music's not as good as new, more modern produced music.
