But I live in a medium sized redneck town in Alberta, Canada. REM had some exposure, but not JAMC. All I had was lame radio that played top 40. It was that or Country radio.

Nirvana to me was the band at the time.

What i said is true, they helped give them exposure to a whole generation who may not of known who they were. Daniel more than VU, VU was more known. But for kids who did not know them at that time, they were the ones who opened the door to those bands. A 12 year old who never heard of VU (they were not even played on radio here) like me, that is how I heard of them. I heard Nirvana's cover of VU and went out and bought the album. That is how kids of that time were exposed to them.

Here radio didn't play stuff like that, music video TV didn't... so how else were you to know of these artists unless you happened to know that music geek who could tell you to check them out? Through the bands you listened to.

It may sound funny to you, but to be there at that time and be a youth at that time, especially in small cities that only played top 40, that was the only way.
It's funny because you think that by covering one of V.U.'s, Nirvana gave them more popularity and attention. We're talking about the band who created so many genres and has had influence over so many others. A band that is FAR more important than Nirvana. What gave V.U. more attention was the popularity of Lou Reed's solo work and other bands' constant citations as them being a musical influence (Sonic Youth, Pavement, and many others).

If you want to make any argument involving V.U. and Nirvana, then we could argue that without V.U. then there would be no Nirvana.

Reading this one might think Nirvana were almost as good as The Replacements.

Yeah, but the one thing people do not always realise about VU was at the time, they had low impact outside of a niche market. The Velvet Underground and Nico album for example, upon it's release had no impact, it barely sold. Not til over a decade later would it become the success it is now. At the time the album came out it was a bomb.

As I save been saying though, it had an impact, but that impact was not felt here. Radio here would not play it, tv would not play it here. So how was it impactful at the time I was growing up? It wasn't til I was in my late teens-early 20's I would hear this stuff myself much more. But it was Nirvana's cover of VU that I personally knew them from.

And this is what it all comes down to. Nirvana were the most important band for you. Just don't let your personal bias elevate their importance to impossible heights.

What are you talking about? Anyone who listens to the Velvet Underground knows how unpopular they were at the time. I'm done talking about this. It was my fault for even getting involved.

Thank you for saying this. I was trying to make him realize that in the beginning of this whole debate.

Yet... he still doesn't understand how subjective his argument is.

I say, if Nirvana did not have a great impact and legacy... we would not be having this debate right now. The fact it still rages on speaks to this.

yeah, I realise you have people on both side of the debate, but they are still debating it to this day.

Maybe years down the line, when much of the music from this time has been forgotten, it will go away. But that is a whole nother topic right there.

I'm not sure about that. I knew about Velvet Underground before I knew Nirvana, and that in godforsaken Serbia. I don't even have to mention David Bowie.

I think much of what I said on VU, Bowie and such has been taken slightly out of context. I am aware they had impact before, I am saying, Nirvana helped push them to people of that generation who may not have exposure to them elsewhere. Of course they were successful before Nirvana came along and had already built a strong following... maybe the percentage of people who knew of them because of Nirvana was a small one, but it was still a percentage of people none the less..
