What gave V.U. more attention was the popularity of Lou Reed's solo work and other bands' constant citations as them being a musical influence (Sonic Youth, Pavement, and many others).
The only reason VU are far more influential than Nirvana, is because they were around some 20 years before Nirvana were ever thought of. To make a fair comparison, you need to take a band from around the same era as Nirvana.

Diamond Head one of the best bands to have ever come out of the UK, finally got some of the recognition that they deserved due to Metallica covering their songs and the amount of bands that have covered VU material is endless.

Hey I totally agree with you.

I'd say get involved and don't give up so easily. I don't know if you can say that as if The Velvet Underground went completely unnoticed because of the songs "Walk on The Wild Side" and "Sweet Jane"
did get airplay. I don't now where you would pin point the time they were totally unpopular. There are one of those cult bands that get a cult following after the fact. Probably more people talk about Television or the Buzzcocks (in the US) now then when they first came out back in the 70's. But maybe nowadays people are know/care less about U.V. now then a few years ago.

I believe BAMF would be bad ass mother f*cker.

Though his remarks on facism and Eric Capton's remarks on immigration were what spawned the creation of "Rock Against Racism".

"Walk on the Wild Side" is a track from Lou Reed's solo album, Transformer. It's not a V.U. song.

Also, I was referring to the time period when they released their debut album (which was in 1967). The Velvet Underground & Nico only peaked at #171 on the Billboard album charts. There's even a famous quote by Brian Eno which says how the album sold poorly, but everyone who bought one made a band. The 60's weren't all that good to them in terms of media exposure.

By the way, when did "Sweet Jane" ever get airplay?

I haven't heard a whole lot by The Who, but I don't really see myself listening to them for fun, if you will.
