Most of their stuff just sounds like long, boring country songs with lots of noodling. I've never understood how people perceive it as trippy or anything, it's just dull to me.

I love Grateful Dead but also understand the dislike. I actually thought much the same way, that they were boring guitar noodlers. Then I had to learn some songs for a band I was in and realized they really have some great music. I don't know how you could listen to American Beauty and think it's not a great selection of concise songs. Brokedown Palace and Ripple are 2 of the most beautiful songs ever written. A good example of a band where you never hear the good stuff on the radio. I think many people dismiss them based on reputation but sounds like people here have at least tried to listen so I'm not trying to convince anyone.

Personally I like them and recognize their place in musical culture, but I can also understand why any normal and sane person would shun them and think what the hell is this crap.
I have only heard them once, and I found them to be "The Most American Band of All Time". Perhaps it was only the album I listened to (the name of which I have forgotten; my darling would know), but the songs all seemed to be about the awesomeness of America. It had a certain naive charm, but it did not grab me.

As per usual, this is my opinion as well. Any jam-based band is at least worthy of my respect, if not more.

20 years from now, the fact the Dead were the most notorious jam band ever will just be a curious side note to their amazing studio accomplishments. But for the time being American Beauty and Workingman's Dead still seem to be lost in the haze of hundreds of booters. I'm glad I got to see them live a couple times but I'm much happier still I can listen songs like Saint Stephen , Black Peter, Uncle John's Band, Dark Star, and Ripple anytime I like. I get the irony of including Dark Star but hey the original was under 3 minutes. Even Kiss had some good studio work but to confuse the Dead with Kiss is to overlook some best song writing of the 20th century. The backbone of the Dead was melody not Drums/Space.

I don't know "the most notorious" musically...maybe party-wise.

I wasn't crazy about the Dead, like aren't they some hippie commune/traveling minstrel show that tour around the country once? It was like a cult of some sorts, right? I find that aspect of the band kinda scary.

I think the better jam bands are ABB and Traffic.

Allman Bros is a good argument but even At Fillmore East doesn't approach Live/Dead. That **** is like telepathic.

I'd say they were a band that were uniquely of their own hippie culture and geographical area only.
