It just seemed a bit odd, seeing as how AC is very similar to Cap'n Jazz (to me anyways).

So I can have the MCR shirt then? :wavey:

I really hate the idea of 'guilty pleasures', it seems completely elitist and ridiculous to feel guilty about listening to a piece of music because it isn't considered cool to. If you enjoy something then you enjoy it, end of.

Amazing movie. So much better than Fear and Loathing.

Ah, but who says the guilt exists because of other people's standards? It is possible for a musical pleasure to be guilty because it eludes your own standards... as in, you have an odd predilection for a band whose genre/scene you normally avoid at any cost.

Exactly. That's why the occasional hair metal song is a guilty pleasure for me.

gunnels 01-22-2009 03:36 PM

I enjoy the occasional Bon Jovi.

Oh I have a theory.

Even as a fan and while they're very damn good at what they do, they play it safe, they're undeniably a commercial band, and they have a kind of sound that should be accessible for anybody, but it's one of the main reasons people hate them I think.

Seltzer 01-22-2009 03:52 PM

I agree with that theory Boo Boo and I do like the Eagles myself though I'm probably biased as I grew up listening to them as a kid.

Hmmmm i see what your saying but people usually use it when talking about music thats very poppy or commercial. I've never heard anyone say 'ooh The Minutemen are a real guilty pleasure of mine'.

I think a lot of what that has to do with is still liking music you liked as a kid but recognizing that if you had been an adult when you first heard it you probably would've thought it sucked. I know that's the case with my relationship to 80s pop and hair metal for example.

Exactly but as I have pointed out in another thread. You get to a certain point in your life and don't really give a crap! I like some music that is not acknowledged as the best and probably quite rightly so. I also like a ton of music that I know deserves a ton of accolades and I will still get berated for. so the thing to strive for is dedication to those artists that you love.

Thats the work of her producer, I recommend finding out who produces/writes her songs and see if you can find an artist they worked for with the vocals you like.

scottsy 01-24-2009 08:02 PM

I'd say if you like Britney's music seek out the body of work that her producer has created... she probably doesn't know alot herself about production, but she can sure pay some good people...

gopaldev 01-24-2009 08:50 PM

Despite not being a fan of glossy modern pop, I always liked the songs and overall production of the first Savage Garden album released in '97 before the barrage of boy bands and Britneys etc......the songs I've heard from their second weren't bad either.

scottsy 01-24-2009 09:15 PM

They weren't awful as pop bands go, and they wrote most of their own stuff, so the level of manufacturing / marketing was at least at sane levels... They basically spilt when the main songwriter and Darren hayes decided to work on separate projects... Hayes later outed himself as ***, and I really don't know what the heck the other guy is doing... I believe he was becoming more interested in production...

I had a friend who was really into them big time, and I liked a few of their songs...

oh damn it did it really blot out that word... I mean that Darren Hayes has come out of the closet as a h0m0sexual... but geez, its a common term and I didn'tuse it in a derogatory way... oh hail the overzealous political correctness of our modern era!

You can get around it by coloring one of the letters in the censored word black like so: gay. If you quote my post you can see how I did that.

It always makes me laugh that everyone from Marvin Gaye to Herbie Hancock to Dick Dale gets censored by that stupid filter.

scottsy 01-24-2009 10:01 PM

Thanks Janzsoon! I'll be sure to use that little trick to get past the oversensitive filter in future!

Surell 01-25-2009 11:44 AM

I used to write horrible rap songs also. Or, I guess they were good for eleven years old.

Arya Stark 01-25-2009 11:52 AM

I started listening to Chevelle because a guy I liked listened to the band and they were going to a concert with Evanescence.

I was planning on inviting him to the concert with me.

I never ended up doing that because I was too shy.

But I still like Chevelle. =P

cheers been trying to get around that. But it think a well-placed asterisk can be good for emphasis on certain words, like c*nt.

Molecules 01-25-2009 08:25 PM

^^ lol, it is a profane Bollywood classic.

But they misspelled it, surely it's cunts? Yeah i'm sure you spell it cunt. oops!

Arya Stark 01-25-2009 08:25 PM

What does any of this have to do with Musical Secrets?

Molecules 01-25-2009 08:29 PM

i don't have a fucking clue

would 'rapture' by Blondie count as a skeleton in the musical cupboard to anybody here because i think it's the best song of all time. ESPECIALLY the rapping.

EDIT: fun fact - Jean Michel Basquiat stood in for Grandmaster Flash when he was a no show for this video :D

Arya Stark 01-25-2009 08:39 PM
