and the point is that I shouldn't be pushing my imagination. urban, you made a great point at one time in this thread pointing out that we still talk about a ****-ton of bands from 25 years ago, the majority in fact. I am considering who, from our generation will be remembered on a large scale as being important and influential.
Actually the point I was making with that post was you don't need to be a musical heavyweight to be remembered in 25 years.

So my point of view is actually closer to piknik's who you were slating than it is to yours.

With the amount of music coming out today and the attention span of the consumer becoming less and less, I think it is going to be difficult for bands from our generation and especially the current generation to leave a big enough lasting impression on the world to be remembered 25 years down the road.

e.g. I really don't think a band like Nickleback is going to be remembered or held in the same regard as a band like Led Zeppelin was and still is today, even though both bands had the same sort of peak in popularity. I think a lot of that has to do with how music is being created today and how the music was back then; today it seems like a lot of the music coming out shares a lot of the same characteristics as it's competition - a lot of the stuff sounds the same - where as in the 60's, 70's and too an extent the 80's and 90's the music that was coming out was unique and organic, every band seemed to have an element that set themselves aside from the next guy which is what makes them memorable.

There were plenty of unoriginal bands coming out in all those eras. Do you realize how many Led Zeppelin rip offs were around in the 70's? Sadly, one of my favorite bands...Rush...started off as one.

The medium is different and we are experiencing a kind of weird musical purgitory where bands and consumers alike are trying to figure out the best way to do this whole music thing. Once things settle, I have no doubt there will be bands that come out of this being remembered.

Don't get me wrong, lot's of eras of music have had many bad or unheard of bands, I am sure not a lot of people have heard of the Budgie's or the Montrose's of the 70's, heck even a band like J Geil's isn't known to the mainstream of music listeners. And band's of that ilk do still exist today but it's the big band's like the Led Zeppelin's that are still remembered today; and what I am saying is the big band's and artist's of this generation, the Nickleback's or the John Mayer's or the Lady Gaga's, just won't have the same longevity as the Zepp's or the Hendrix's or the Pink Floyd's because their music just isn't as unique or interesting as it's ancestors.

You are comparing Lady Gaga to Led Zeppelin?

The reason they won't be remembered is because they are utter crap...you have to remember Led Zeppelin were not the media whores of the 70's just because they are remembered. They are remembered because people realize the quality in their music. Critics at the time bashed them at any turn. The Lady Gagas and Nickelbacks of the 70's were also around, but thankfully were forgotten. You are using the wrong standards for comparison here.

Which is exactly what I am trying to say. And no I am not comparing Lady Gaga to Zepp, your completely misinterpreting what I am saying.

I'm saying that the big hitters of today, forget about what genre they are, just look at the big artists of today, like or lump it the Nickelback's and the lady Gaga's are as big today, as the Zepp's and Hendrix's we're in their hayday, forget about comparing their music, because frankly that is a pointless comparison, what we are comparing is their popularity at the time of their peak fame. The peak of the popularity for the Nickelbacks and Lady Gaga's are comparable to that of the big artists of the 60's, 70's, 80's when they we're at the peak of their popularity etc.

So now that that is established let's look at what the thread is questioning:

"Which artists of our generation will still be talked about 25 years from now?"

What I am saying to that:

I don't think the big artists of OUR generation, will be remembered 25 years down the road because their music just isn't as interesting and unique as it's ancestors (the Zepp's, the Hendrix's, the Jeff Beck's etc) to be remembered.

I hope that you can understand I am agreeing with you lol.

I've only ever met 1 Nickelback fan, I don't think they're that popular, at least over here anyway? Almost everyone I've met just thinks they're shit. There's a few Lady Gaga fans knocking about though.

I hate Nickelback as much as the next guy or gal but if your the 2nd best selling act in the states behind the Beatles, and one of your albums has 7 + million copies sold, then you must be doing something right.

Haha...I understood what you were saying. What I don't think you are understanding from me is that Led Zeppelin...though technically as popular as Lady Gaga today...filled a different niche of popularity.

The whole point of my responses is to tell you there are bands out there with just as much credibility as Led Zeppelin that WILL be remembered. Don't use Nickelback/Lady Gaga as your base of comparison.

Jesus Christ. I feel proud to be British, I bet over in the states you come across a few Nickelback fans then.
