49. Lync - Remembering the Fireballs (Part 8) [1997] I mean, they do have a studio album that came out in 1994, but I like this one more, it's got pretty much all of my favorites from them. It's a compilation of singles and unreleased tracks. Lync were only around for 2 years and made one album before calling it quits. If you don't know about them, then calling yourself an indie expert is just nonsense. Bands such as the Promise Ring and Modest Mouse were highly influenced by this. 2 of these guys toured as band members with Built to Spill, and one of them formed a new band with the drummer for MM. They made lo-fi, dynamic, soft-yet-hard, twinkly, cathartic post hardcore, and now everyone's doing it. We owe a lot to this band. |

50. The Auteurs - New Wave (1993) A certified 10/10 for me. Every track is great in it's own right, and it flows magnificently. The lyrics are playful, cutting and generally engaging. I love the instrumentation and production of the record. Cool bass lines, jangly guitars, slick drumming/percussion and nice keyboard/piano licks. 'Bailed Out' may be in my Top 10 songs of all time. Damn, just listen to it if you haven't. Definitely one of the best Pop albums ever.

51. This Heat - This Heat (1979) I'm a huge fan of their more accessible album Deceit, but this is my favourite This Heat album. There are a lot of elements going on in this album from industrial to musique concrete to post-punk to drums n bass to the straight avant-garde. This trio of multi-instrumentalists is incredibly ahead of its time and few bands match the level of genius exhibited in This Heat's music so maybe that time isn't even here yet. Their harmonies are great, the instrumental element is unique to This Heat. You need to listen to this album.

52. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac) 1968 Who knew the blues could be done so well by a bunch of white English blokes. Long before Rumours Fleetwood Mac was just a ballsy blues band. This album evokes emotions out of you that you never knew you had.

53. Marillion - Afraid Of Sunlight (1995) I'll throw this classic into the list since it's been on my mind a bit lately. It's the Hogarth-era of this band's undisputed masterpiece, right up there with OK Computer or your favorite Brit-pop records. There's an inspired blending of a lot of the stuff that was going on musically in the mid 90's: college alt. rock jangliness, the aforementioned Brit-pop, shoegaze...and, of course, the progressive rockisms that most people associated with these guys to begin with. Brilliant and occasionally bizarre sounding material abounds, especially the strangely subversive ode to The Beach Boys in 'Cannibal Surf Babe' and the soaring title track.
