It's not. The British doctor who introduced that theory in the 90's was proven wrong a couple of years ago and he is now prohibited from practicing medicine again. There are parents who still believe that sh*te though.

The autism spectrum is a lot more broad now than it ever was before.

I remember when Oojay had an absolute f*cking meltdown about the whole vaccines cause autism thing. He seriously believes it.

This. I seem to remember having a flabbergasting debate with him about how anecdotal evidence is flawed and he just would not see reason.

About the vaccines and autism thing right? I remember that.

There are still people who think autism (and the spectrum as a whole) is made up, because it's an "invisible illness." Like **** you douchebags. You can't ****ing make up mental disabilities like that.

The reason autism is more "prominent" now is because it's more detected.

Years ago, schooling was very different. All you had to do was sit quietly in front of the teacher, conform, copy things from the board, rote learn stuff. Today, school is very different. You have to learn to work with others, in groups, and collaborate. You have to think critically, more choice in your learning, and rote learnt stuff plays much less of a role. More than anything, you have to use language and communication skills more than ever before. In the past, individuals with autism slotted into the conformative, structured, "rote" environment of school perfectly. These days, the integration is much more difficult, which is why many children are tested during the first few years of primary school and diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.

It's not the vaccines, it's not the food we eat or chemicals in the air...

Also, autism is not a "mental disorder" per se, but a neurodevelopmental disorder.

I absolutely agree with this. Back in the day people were just considered crazy and got thrown into mental institutions as there was no understanding of what autism is and how it can be managed without being institutionalised.

Being consulted to another psychiatrist and possibly consulted to a sleep clinic...enormous fun. I told them my days off, and they were all, "yeah, all right, but you can get off for two weeks?" and I was all, "LMAO, not at all."

right now i am working with a teenager who is non-verbal which is very challenging. i have had jobs in the past working with teenagers with behavior and slight mental problems (like highly functioning autistic kids) but never had worked with someone non-verbal until now. Its weird to think that he sometimes has ideas in his head but cant communicate verbally. He gets really frustrated and hits himself a lot because he wants something but cant tell me and i have to try to guess. i am always wondering what is goin on in his head.

ive also seen some kids who lack safety awareness completely. i mean like running into traffic or eating soap. just no concept of what is safe and what is not. i can not imagine being a parent of someone like this id probably be worried constantly

Yeah, working with non-verbal kids is challenging, most of the autistic children I work with are non-verbal, but they are quite young (primary school aged). I always hope that their language and communication will improve as they get older, as I only see them at a young age when even the simplest thing like going to the toilet is a challenge.

And safety awareness is a big thing as well, most of my ASD kids need constant supervision out on the playground.
