This album is The Pressure is On has at least three great tracks.

Two landmark originals

And an excellent take on a classic

Next is a band that deserves considerable attention and has certainly been discussed on Music Banter before. The great Neutral Milk Hotel were formed in Ruston, Louisiana.

Let’s do them justice!

Everything Is
Album by Neutral Milk Hotel

This EP is the first release by NMH. I don’t have any verification of this but the title track could be a nod to Sun Ra’s Nothing Is. Also in the I don’t really know department is that this seems to me heavily influenced by Sebadoh. Whatever the cases it’s a great record by a fantastic band.

Everyting Is is my favourite pre-Aeroplane NMH song. I think the hipster reputation of NMH does not do justice to how beautiful and emotional their (or pretty much, his) music is.

On Avery Island
Studio album by Neutral Milk Hotel

Avery Island, a reference to a salt dome in Louisiana and the home town of Tabasco, defines Neutral Milk Hotel musically and places in them in a pioneering role artistically. Obviously this is Jeff Magnum’s child but it wouldn’t standout nearly as much without Robert Schneider’s horn arrangements. The following two examples run back to back on the record and really reach into the heart of the beauty.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is the second and final album by the American indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel

The only girl I've ever loved
Was born with roses in her eyes
But then they buried her alive
One evening 1945
With just her sister at her side
And only weeks before the guns
All came and rained on everyone
Now she's a little boy in Spain
Playing pianos filled with flames
On empty rings around the sun
All sing to say my dream has come
But now we must pick up every piece
Of the life we used to love
Just to keep ourselves
At least enough to carry on
And now we ride the circus wheel
With your dark brother wrapped in white
Says it was good to be alive
But now he rides a comet's flame
And won't be coming back again
The Earth looks better from a star
That's right above from where you are
He didn't mean to make you cry
With sparks that ring and bullets fly
On empty rings around your heart
The world just screams and falls apart
But now we must pick up every piece
Of the life we used to love
Just to keep ourselves
At least enough to carry on
And here's where your mother sleeps
And here is the room where your brothers were born
Indentations in the sheets
Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore
And it's so sad to see the world agree
That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies
All when I'd want to keep white roses in their eyes

I've been playing a lot of Ping-Pong myself lately. So much that five of us girls have formed a club. It's called "The Little Dipper Minus Two." A really silly name, but it's based on a mistake. We wanted to give our club a special name; and because there were five of us, we came up with the idea of the Little Dipper. We thought it consisted of five stars, but we turned out to be wrong. It has seven, like the Big Dipper, which explains the "Minus Two." Ilse Wagner has a Ping-Pong set, and the Wagners let us play in their big dining room whenever we want. Since we five Ping-Pong players like ice cream, especially in the summer, and since you get hot playing Ping-Pong, our games usually end with a visit to the nearest ice-cream parlor that allows Jews: either Oasis or Delphi.

even just reading the lyrics makes me emotional

Quote:

And she was born in a bottle rocket, 1929
With wings that ringed around a socket right between her spine
All drenched in milk in holy water pouring from the sky
I know that she will live forever, she won't ever die

she goes, and now she knows she'll never be afraaaiiiddd
imagine feeling a deep love for some girl who died a horrible death a long time ago
