Out of New Orleans came The Meters, one of the most influential and sampled funk bands of all time.

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was born in New Orleans in 1829. Besides the Romantic era non-stop bukkake Avengers style grand finale-ism demonstrated above his music was some of the earliest, if not THE earliest ragtime, and other slower compositions were the darlings on silent movie piano players since they left no doubt the emotional strings he was trying to pull on.

For reference Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt were born in 1810 and 1811 respectively.

Buddy Bolden

No recordings of his music exist but he’s universally considered one of the earliest pioneers of jazz. Oral history and legend describes his style of play as relentless and aggressive. He was a bad alcoholic and drank himself insane and finally died in a mental institution.

Pretty sure I read a novel about that guy. Don't remember much about it. I think this was it.

I didn’t know about that. Same author won the Booker. I’m interested in reading that now.

It's been so long I don't really remember much about it but I remember it being more of a crime drama that happened to cross paths with New Orleans jazz rather than really being about it.
