Al Pacino is very popular with the ladies

TheCunningStunt 04-19-2010 10:00 AM

He's got nothing on Johnny Depp or Dicaprio.

FETCHER. 04-19-2010 10:22 AM

nooo, I never got those obsessions. Depp was lookin pretty good in alice in wonderland... a little too much makeup for my liking though ;)

Watched this today:

ÊTRE ET AVOIR (2002) de Nicolas Philibert

http://www.frenchfilm.vcu.edu/2003/i...oster-etre.jpg

Plot: How do we learn to live with others and their wishes? Director Nicolas Philibert poses this question in a village schoolhouse in Auvergne, where Georges Lopez teaches 13 children, ages ranging from about four to 12. Against a landscape of mountains and farmland, from driving snow to rain to sun, the children gather in Lopez's warm and colorful classroom, to read, write dictation, cook, and sort things out. At home, the older ones do homework with parents after their chores. At year's end, they look ahead to the next, visiting the middle school and meeting the little ones coming in the fall. As they learn sums and adjectives, with Lopez's help, they also learn to live side by side. -IMDB

Truly touching. It made me relive my school years, and remember the rare teachers that truly got to me. Very well made, loved it.

So you're saying they're both blah actors just because they are type casted?

Not all actors are "disappear into role" actors, some bring a certain persona into it like DeNiro and Nicholson and that's part of their appeal.

Pacino and DeNiro are both top tier for me, even if their more recent work is pretty terrible.

DeNiro has a lot of greats. Godfather II, Untouchables, all of his Scorsese work. Awakenings is pretty underrated too.

I could understand the dislike for Scarface but what about The Godfather films? Dog Day Afternoon? Serpico? Insider? Insomnia? Glengarry Glenn Ross?

I liked his wonderfully hammy performance in Scent of a Woman too, though he didn't deserve to win the oscar and that speech scene in the end was really heavy handed.

Burning Down 04-19-2010 04:49 PM

I didn't really like Troy. Brad Pitt didn't seem very convincing in the role and Eric Bana is just not a good actor in my opinion. Plus Brad Pitt is not all that good looking (there, I said it).

FETCHER. 04-19-2010 05:00 PM

UH OH! OH NO YOU DID-ENT!! brad pitt never does it for me, but in troy... oh my  If he had short hair id have married my dvd.

i didnt think it was that bad, it was boring and draggy at times, but some parts were quite funny :)

stormjh 04-19-2010 05:20 PM

It had a few laughs, not worth the rest of the film at all, the characters were all very cliche and predictable, the dialogue was pretty naff too, I just thought it was pretty awful.

But then I did have a bad neck and they did make me sit in the ****ing front row, but I don't think I'm letting that cloud my judgement too much, I honestly expected more from Gervais.

completely agree. I found the funny parts were gold. but inbetween it was slow and predictable. If I'm honest I didn't expect much from gervais, I've seen a few films with him in it and they weren't the best. I dunno wither he directed it and what not though :(

stormjh 04-19-2010 05:28 PM

Yeah him and Stephen Merchant wrote + directed it, I wasn't expecting the dialogue to be as bad as it was, I'm not too bothered about there not being many laughs if the rest of the film is good, but it just wasn't for me.

That is a very good movie. I loved the concept and the directing style.

My favourite part in the movie was when the Native guy comes to attack him, and before he hits him he says, "Hey, go smoke a ****in' peace pipe!". That made me and my friend laugh so hard.

Good film, I found the relationships between the main characters strange but it added something to the film, an element of unpredictability and intensity. 7/10

Yeah. It's like it opened it my eyes to a whole new world, the first time I watched.
I remember replaying it the second it finished. I just didn't want it to end.

Weird Fact: When Pulp Fiction came to the local (Lebanese) cinemas, the censorship comity rearranged the scenes so they'd become chronological, as they felt the montage made the story hard to follow. Other than censoring a bit of the language and violence. Aren't they sweet?

TheCunningStunt 04-20-2010 02:42 AM

Very sweet. Wish someone would've done that for me. I still don't actually get the story as such, it's all arse ways up.. I just enjoyed it for what it was.. a brilliant film.

Damn, that's sucks. That totally undermines the significance of Jules change of conscience at the end of the movie.

First time I seen it was 3 weeks ago :)

crash_override 04-20-2010 08:32 AM

I always thought the plot to Pulp Fiction was fairly easy to follow. I think it would take a lot away from the film to see it rearranged like that. The censorship on cable TV is painful enough to watch. It's one of those movies that encourages you to follow along, like it's almost hard to look away, and the censorship takes away from that IMO.

I was watching it, it started at the cafe a load of stuff happened and then went back to the cafe. I do get it, it was just a bit  when I first watched it. The jump in time..

Zarko 04-20-2010 10:43 AM

Watched two tonight

http://addins.kwwl.com/blogs/critica...f_the_dead.jpg

I really didn't mind it - I thought the cheesyness of Dawn killed it in my first viewing though gained a different appreciation of that with a group of friends. The gore was a little too intense even for me at times tbh. And I prefer the movie much much more with my interpretation -
SPOILER>>> They were killed when she went to hop into the helicopter, my reasoning being that the only other time you see her crossing off her calendar was during her initial dream, and the final scene is a 'better place' type dream, though that is a bit of a cop out. Not that just imagining them finding a place of solitude is any consolation. If that was 'real' I would have much prefered seeing a zombie walk out from the trees.<<< SPOILER

Japanese psychological thriller. I really quite enjoyed it, though theories abound from its ending and how it came to.

^ This was my last watch as well, i'm assuming it's a 'the books better' jobby. Pretty good though, gotta love Jeff Bridges in it.

I thought that movie was great. It made me really wish I was psychic.

The Rifftrax (link) and about four bowls actually made it pretty watchable. I don't know if I could take it sober/solo, though--I might chew my arm off.

Last movie I watched was Singles with Matt Dillon.

Nah I've only seen it once, and it jumped from here to there and back and to somewhere else. Confusing. I may watch it again.

Psssch, it isn't that bad. Have you ever seen it Kid?

Nine Black Poppies 04-20-2010 06:29 PM

I've seen worse movies, by a long shot, to be fair.
But, still... it's so goddamned ridiculous.

(I am eagerly awaiting a Breaking Dawn film adaptation, though. If they make that plotline into a mainstream, well-budgeted Hollywood film, it's kind of a sign that any insane idea at least has a shot at the big time.)

DeathBreath 04-20-2010 06:41 PM

2012 was the last movie I watched. It was SO funny!
I adored the fact that in the getting out of California scene in the Limo they missed every obstacle and destruction which is just impossible. Effects were good actually, quite enjoyed them.
Movie was absurd though.
