Not to disregard football, but boxing and baseball especially have long and deep ties with American culture. I would put horse racing up above basketball though...

You're right. I chose basketball because I wanted to pick 3 sports and I really like Hoosiers.

watched it over a friend's place Saturday night. what really impressed me was the fact that most of the stunts (minus the life threatening ones, of course) were done without strings and fancy effects. that and how they trained the main actor, who was a Korean pop star, to do alot of the stunts and moves in only 3 months.

can't really say i was impressed by the CGI, though. it really ranged from bearable to just UGLY. still, if you want an action movies with crazy stunt work, you could do alot worse.

Despite it's low budget, this is still one hell of a film. Classic.

Decent, well played and plotted but as with most mystery whodunnits you don't really want to watch again because you know who it is but still very watchable.

There is nothing wrong with this film at all. Well directed and not too juvenile in ripping apart Hollywood but I just didn't laugh. The only time I did was for the fake trailers at the start of the film. Robert Downey Jr is so good in this film but he is TOO good and I ended up admiring his performance instead of enjoying it.

This movie was so good, I was a little mad when it was over. Definately a tie between this and The Social Network for best movie of the year. 10/10.

I did get some sleep but I feel asleep at my desk, I didn't make it to my bed plus I had a nap earlier. I have a pretty stupid sleep schedule.

I haven't got a clue. I turned the remake off after 15 minutes, it pissed me off that much.

I will watch any old shit once and yes it was just that. CGI overload but what do you expect from Stephen Sommers? He is not exactly subtle is he?

I was just hoping that it would be a so bad it's good movie but alas :(

Bloozcrooz 02-09-2011 05:37 AM

I have to say I was hoping for a bit more out of this film. The storyline had the makings for what I thought was gonna be a great depiction. Of some of the hardships in early African-American culture. Showing in part the escape from these trying times through some great Blues music. The formula was there but it just never really captured the overall feeling I was looking for. Still not a bad film for anyone interested in something along those lines.

a funny and rather interesting twist on the typical "dysfunctional" family comedy/drama....i actually found Julianne Moore's performance to really out shine Annette Benings.....but then again Benning's character is almost a perfect match of my own mother...which basically made me hate her....although i'm pretty sure my mom is not a lesbian....still very funny and a good movie....its worth watching but i really don't see what all the hype is for

debaserr 02-09-2011 09:17 PM

I don't recall anyone calling it anything that it isn't. just a solid flick.

VEGANGELICA 02-10-2011 09:48 AM

"Furry Vengeance." 6/10

I checked out this movie because I thought it would be some good vegan propaganda for my child, since it's about nature getting revenge on a developer who is unconcerned about ruining the enivornment.

This is one of those movies that is so bad it's actually kind of good! :)

My favorite part is when the developer's wife, played by the lovely Brooke Shields, gets accused of his murder time and again by a short, suspicious, military-like trooper who eagerly assumes she is guilty, even when her husband turns up alive.

In one scene, after the husband staggers up thereby proving he has not been murdered, the trooper still feels Brooke is guilty of something, and so he glares up at her and says: "I've got my eye on you, Amazon woman."

Then he holds up two of his fingers, points at his own eyes and then hers, and says, "Ka-KAWWW!" to show he's like a hawk watching her every move, waiting for her to show her true murderous self. Meanwhile, she's completely innocent.

That part in the movie always cracks me up.

RJMcDonnell 02-10-2011 10:51 AM

I really enjoyed The Fighter. Christian Bale was very convincing as a junkie trying to relive his glory days while his brother had a real shot at a title. My only disappointment was that the movie ended before the Mickey Ward v. Arturo Gatti fights. They were the best offensive fights I've ever seen.

djchameleon 02-11-2011 04:18 AM

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie upon a second viewing the first time I saw it. I was bored to tears but this time I actually gave it a chance and really paid attention to what was being said/going on and it's a very smart political thriller imo.

http://www.independent.co.uk/multime...BIG_23233t.jpg

Meh it was okay but I totally prefer the original for the cheese factor. They lose that when the movie is dripping in CGI.

I'm about as far from a trekky as they come, but I still love this film. It's full of the kind of depth, mystery and intrigue that's so lacking in a lot of other sci-fi films I've seen. Possibly my favourite sci-fi of all time.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/6/...d_2_poster.jpg

I'd seen this a couple of times before, and I can see why I didn't really enjoy it so much. It certainly takes a lot longer to get going, and it's a much more complex story, but I loved it on the last viewing, so it just goes to show that all it takes is a little patience to enjoy this one. Not sure if it's better than the first film of the franchise, but it's definitely somewhere near that level.

http://www.hypnogoria.com/images/rev...s%20poster.jpg

Much, much better than I expected it to be. Really well written, great effects, and it literally had me wondering how it was all gonna end 'til the last few minutes. Good to see Adrian Brody taking on such an unusual role for him and making quite a good meal of it too.

http://www.comingsoon.net/gallery/18...der_poster.jpg

Started really well, but I was practically dying of boredom after the first half hour or so. They killed off Steve Coogan's character too soon dammit!

I am a big John Carpenter fan but this and Starman were real low points for me :(

As for me recently:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lock-movie.jpg
I vaguely remembered this being OK when I saw it years ago but it is actually pretty crap. Prisoners are controlled by explosive collars linked to another (unknown to them) prisoner which is a half decent concept but it fails miserably on closer inspection :(

I guess nostalgia is not always a good thing. Although Mimi Rogers tight trousers did distract me now and again.

Guybrush 02-11-2011 08:13 PM

^I remember watching Wedlock years ago .. Or that is, I remember that we rented it and put it on, but I don't remember much of the movie. They were trying to escape from a prison and that's about it. I guess it must be completely forgettable.

For those who like entertaining crap and Rutger Hauer, I can recommend Split Second. It's a film set in a dark future (well, 2008 actually) where Rutger Hauer plays the ultimate Bad Cop who runs on a constant supply of coffee, sugar and a bad temper. In addition to harassing his partner and dropping silly one-liners, he's also trying to hunt down a monster/serial killer.

http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/78211.gif

It's completely ridiculous and over the top, but Hauer fits the role perfectly and I had a lot of fun watching it .. twice :D

One I did see recently that was to my liking was this. Maybe you'd find it interesting if you havent aready seen it. Matt Damon playing the genuis role again. Not as good as Good Will Hunting but watchable and worth rewatching imo.

I think I do have this somewhere! Hauer has carved out a niche in B movies with some decent roles along the way.

Still waiting for this to come out. Apologies I have posted this before. NSFW.

An odd link to another film. Yes I have this film. John Malkovich is awesome. One of directors John Dahl's better efforts post film noir (Kill Me Again/Red Rock West/The Last Seduction).

Pretty brilliant to be honest. My knowledge of non-Anglophone film is terrible, and this was a fantastic reconstruction of civil war that was far more balanced than any other film on terrorism I've ever seen.

Pink Floyd - Pulse

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JzHOybHhHq...e_dvd_2005.jpg

Words cannot describe the experience that was today, watching this DVD with the blinds covered, surround system, and a body full of THC. That might have been the best two hours I ever spent, and it will probably be the closest thing that I will experience to a Pink Floyd concert. So many things to see, the lights, the laser, the movie playing in the background, the guitar work, the keyboard work, the vocals, the drum playing, this has to be one of the most underrated performances ever, and to me, it is the best possible experience that one could experience. I envy the people that were there, I would give 25 years of my life for a chance to experience this groundbreaking performances. It was ****ing amazing, and if you haven't seen this, watch it with the best possible home theater you can make. (Optional, but this was made to be watched stoned.)

100/10

it's a cult classic just because YOU don't like it. cult classics don't need some artistic reasoning behind them.

I loved Harry Brown so much. I can't believe it flew under my radar for this long. I don't think I will ever get tired of the whole "old man being a badass" genre that has been coming out as of late.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OkNbhAFu3n...pOutPoster.jpg

I don't get all the hate that this movie gets. It was funny for what it was. I don't even feel like Scott was a scene stealer like some reviews claim. I just found him childish and annoying. Being even more childish than Tracy but not being as funny idk, I just didn't like him in this movie. I love how the movie was paying tribute to buddy cop comedies from the 80s. The soundtrack helped with that feeling as well.

Howard the Duck 02-13-2011 01:20 AM

Just watched The Gridiron Gang on TV last night.

The Rock is a pretty good dramatic actor.
