Wow. Bob reccemended me this a while ago... and it is absolutely shocking. How can a country in the developed world let stuff like this happen to so many people? I loved the really quiet narration by the director, it gave this documentary a very different atmosphere from most. 9.5/10

Really good remake. Didn't get the quiet wintery atmosphere quite as good as the first one, but still very good. Also I didn't really like the pool scene. Kind of a minor nitick, but I love that scene in the original so much. 8.5/10

Been going through anything Crispin Glover I haven't seen. Strangely, this is one of the ones I'd not seen.

It was a'ight. Crispin was creepy and wonderful.

Guybrush 02-17-2011 01:47 AM

Crispin Glover and his hesitant, pathetic (he plays pathetic characters) brand of weirdness is generally a bit much for me. I don't ever think I've seen a movie where I thought he did very good acting, although I guess he fit the lead part role in Willard.

L'avventura by Antonioni

http://www.ioncinema.com/old/images/...892_poster.jpg

Very good, but kind of drawn out at parts. Visually it's really stunning, which is one of the reasons I could sit through the drawn out parts, and the acting is good. It stars one Italy's two biggest stars. It's very existential. So far one of my favorite Antonioni. Really questions the fine line (or concept of a line) between sexuality and love.

This trailer kind of makes it sounds like a porno:

I really didn't find him especially creepy in Back to the Future; I just thought he was awkward.

Also, horrible movie though it may be, he didn't creep me out at all in Nurse Betty.

awkward is enough to fit into the weird category.

I love Nurse Betty but I don't remember him in it.

A very touching story about a single mother and her two teenage daughters struggling to deal with the complications of love and life in a trailer park in New Mexico. There's some brilliant acting in this movie and also keep an eye out for a cameo from J. Mascis who also composed a lot of the soundtrack.

Primarily because, and I know this was intentional but,
Spoiler for Spoiler:
the protagonist was such a sleazeball douchebag of an unlikeable character that it was painful watching him. Also, the plot was a bit stupid. Why did he want to kill the politician in the first place? That bit is never explained. What's worse is, why does he suddenly drop that ambition altogether and become fixated on the hooker? That has even less of an explanation and was a poor excuse for a "plot turn".

I did like the cinematography and the way the film captured 1970's NYC.

Been waiting to see this since I read the book about 50 million years ago.
Rhys Ifans is fantastic playing Marks as is David Thewlis playing IRA man Jim McCann. But the whole film just seems rushed & thrown together, doesn't really go into depth about anything and there just seems to be a total lack of any sort of drama to it.

Disappointing.

...No, I'm not a hipster. That would put me into a subculture, and that's just too mainstream for me. ;p

Although one of my favorite places in the world is hipster central. Really, the whole neighborhood is. Ha.

I finally got around to seeing The Expendables and I really enjoy all the little insider jokes being tossed around. It was good for some mindless action fun.

Maybe crap was a bit harsh but I did not particularly enjoy it.

Perhaps there is some important aspect of "great" film that I'm under- or mis-appreciating because I did not like "Mulholland Drive" and that was also, apparently, amazing.

that's a bit more understandable. You could say that you didn't like/enjoy it but to chalk it up as crap is a bit much.

I agree with you on Mulholland Drive after it was finished and I was like? that's it? why? what's the point? another example of visual masturbation from a pretentious director.

Howard the Duck 02-20-2011 05:47 AM

they're finally gonna show True Grit here

watching that next

Flume 02-20-2011 06:01 AM

Just saw ''The Social Network'' yesterday, I thought it was quite good. I didn't have much expectations but I was pleasantly surprised by it. I thought it came of as believable and touching. A great performance by Jesse Eisenberg (lead role).

I can understand how, when I initially phrased my opinion of the film, it sounded as though I was acting as some sort of great authority on film quality. But I think a lot of people fail to realize (stuntcough) that it IS simply my opinion, and I'm perfectly aware of the fact that I'm NOT a film connoisseur and that I don't watch a lot of film and that my opinions hold very little, if any, weight to anyone but myself.

I used to think Taxi Driver was a bit **** as well, very overrated until I got older (I watched it for the first time when I was about 13). I watched it recently and loved it, the way its filmed is so gorgeous.

Genius comedy starring Jim Carrey as a gay con-artist who falls in love with a prison inmate. A very funny and entertaining film.

I completely forgot about this movie. I need to see it. I love that pimping white pants/buckle combo he has in the movie poster

Taxi Driver is one of my favorite films.
Everything about it is just so mesmerizing and pretty fucking gritty.
Especially the (spoiler alert) 12 year old prostitute....

I've always been a fan of horror anthology movies. This one was no exception. It had equally good moments of gore, suspense, and humor. I first heard of it when reading Bloody Disgustings top 20 horror movies of the 00's.

The Godfather part I.

I have never been a big movie person but recently decided to watch this. I felt like I needed to re-watch it yesterday though in order to understand everything. I am currently watching part II. I've seen this one too but also felt like I needed to see it again so I'm currently watching it again. I have yet to see part III and I know I can't expect nearly as much out of it as the first two but I am going to watch it anyway because I have spent the time watching the others I might as well watch this one too.

EDIT: Watching The Godfather trilogy started after I got in the mood for gangster films after watching Goodfellas and Casino for the 80th time each, haha.

I only realy like two and the parallel stories of father and son, otherwise The Godfather (all three of them) is pretty hit and miss for me

Goodfellas is cool, though

djchameleon 02-24-2011 03:18 AM

I loved this movie so much and as I was watching it a few parallels could be drawn to my short story that I wrote recently. Even though I stopped at part one and I wanted to continue it at a later date. I can no longer write anymore to that story because this movie has tainted my mind and I don't want to use anything that will make people think that I got my ideas from this movie when I didn't. I wrote my short story weeks before this movie came out.

The few parts that were a bit cliche was the love plot line. I just groaned anytime he said something romantic because it was filled with cheese. Another downfall of the movie is while you are trying to figure out what his powers are you are constantly judging him or maybe that's just my rowdy friends that I went with. They couldn't stop talking and they completely live up to the loud black people in theaters stereotype. They were joking and saying "what is he?" "a lighthouse superman?" I found that a bit funny because he did seem that way. Until they explored his powers more and showed you what he can do. I didn't like that because they were slowly releasing his powers that anything he or his partner needed for the situation they could do and then they just claim or yeah that's part of my powers as well. like wtf that's too convenient. Other than those few negatives though, if you are in the mood for some super hero type fun then go ahead and watch it you'll enjoy it. As I did for the most part. I would give it a C+

Howard the Duck 02-24-2011 03:38 AM

^^ here, you'd get a lot of people telling you off if you talk loudly during a movie

djchameleon 02-24-2011 03:44 AM

I would enjoy that actually. I'm always very quiet during movies. Yeah, sometimes you will get the random person yelling "STFU" but that's only during like the busy weekend times. There wasn't many people in there when we went to the matinee showing.

Here you will too, but there are a lot of assholes who still talk. I actually think it's gotten worse in the past decade or so because of cell phones too.

About what I was expecting.

Those action scenes were pretty cringeworthy I thought

Freebase Dali 02-24-2011 04:36 PM

Saw this for the first time a few days ago:
http://www.moviepostershop.com/mr-no...1020550526.jpg

It's probably one of the most refreshingly unique movies I've seen lately. Very enjoyable. Somewhat of a mind-fuck at first, and the ending could have been a bit stronger, but it's definitely a movie I'll watch again. Especially if I happen to be on some sort of hallucinogen.

Anyone else see this?
