Sister Act 2 (US 1991), in which Lauryn Hill, aged about 17 or 18, plays a sulky teenager and a wasted Maggie Smith is trotted out in eccentric old lady mode. The funny thing is the young people are portrayed as right-on and rebellious because they are into rap. How times change. The critics disliked the film because the supporting cast of 'singing nuns' were relegated to supporting the younger members and the plot is contrived to make a sequel. Despite these things, I enjoyed the film, because, after all, it is intended to be silly. Warninig: the film was directed by character actor Bill Duke and, as such, he was adequate in various films, but is a very ham-fisted director.

Django Unchained A great performance from Christoph Waltz, I also enjoyed the soundtrack and cinematography. I liked the first half of the film best and thought it started to drag in the third act. I felt there were some character inconsistencies towards the end that were added only to advance the plot. Regardless, it's an excellent film though I think they could have achieved the same results in less time.

http://www.awardsdaily.com/FYC/2012/arbitrage5.jpg Arbitrage Not bad Dick Gere. Not bad. In a weak year for acting I think he'd get a couple nominations but this year was somewhat packed with great performances. I thought it was a pretty decent political/family thriller punctuated by great performances all around especially from Gere and Tim Roth. It's weird but when Tim Roth does and American accent it comes out wrong but in no way bad or annoying. He does wrong right for some odd reason. It's worth a viewing. 3.5/5 http://www.wired.com/geekdad/wp-cont...on-660x412.jpg Goon Not as bad as I thought it would be. I think it rewarded itself by not having Sean William Scott be the funniest or even the second funniest character in the movie. I thought all the humor came from all the secondary characters on the hockey team and Jay Baruchel including one of the funniest lines I've heard in a comedy recently... Hilarious. 3/5 http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NmCbqgbMC_...olarisAT02.jpg Solaris Well that was interesting. This is my first Tarkovsky film as I still have to see Ivan's Childhood and Stalker but I'm glad I got this out of the way now considering it's nearly three hours long. This film, among other similarities, suffers the same fate that Kubrick's 2001 suffered in the way that it's gorgeous cinematography couple with plot devices that can be discussed for years but at the same time is completely boring as sh*t. Seriously. This could be sold over the counter as sleeping pills. This is no way takes away from the film it's just that it is a challenge to watch and I usually LOVE slow films. The ending was as haunting and confusing an ending that I've ever seen and was a bow on top of a great albeit long film experience that I'm glad happened. I'd like to see his other films now considering he's a legend of auteur cinema. 4/5 |

Ivan's Childhood will probably be refreshing for you, as it's much more fast-paced (still pretty slow by most standards though). It's definitely way more accessible than Stalker. |
I've been unable to make it through Solaris, I always either turn it off and fall asleep. Granted I do usually attempt to watch it while high/drunk so that's probably most at fault. I try to watch Stalker at least once a year, and I have been meaning to get into his other movies.
|
The only Solaris , I know is the 2002 version with George Clooney but I feel like if it's a challenge to get through that other version I may have to look for it and accept said challenge.

The last film I saw was Django Unchained. Two points remain:
1) I love Tarantino. 2) I believe he gets better and better with time. |
Now that it's out on home media, I guess it would.be a good time to make a movie war between Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, since there's so much to compare.

I actually wanted to see that when it came out. Maybe I was just hoping for more of Bad Santa. |

http://www.impawards.com/1948/poster...erra_madre.jpg The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Great film. John Houston directs his father Walter and the great Humphrey Bogart in this film about greed and paranoia that greatly influenced PT Andersons There Will Be Blood credited by the fact that he screened the film over and over again while making the film. Everybody that usually reads my posts in this thread knows that while I'm a film fanatic, I arrived late to the party. For this reason i haven't seen many western films. I still have The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on blu ray sitting on my shelf for me to watch. That day is going to come soon given the fact that I'm starting to love western movies. I liked this better than Shane and The Searchers. It was great watching Bogart change his whole character as the film progressed. He's becoming one of my favorite old time actors. 4/5 http://cdn.rsvlts.com/wp-content/upl...oln-poster.jpg Lincoln I'm going to have to watch this again. I found it a bit boring and the amount of characters to keep track of was a chore to uphold. I found a lot of enjoyable moments and aspects of the film though. DDL was incredible. I still thought Joaquin Phoenix was better in The Master but there is nothing wrong with DDL as Lincoln. Hell, the dude WAS Lincoln. I actually felt like I was watching our 16th president the entire time. he supporting cast was great including Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field. The score and direction was great but the screenplay was just a bit flat for my taste. I wanted a bit more background on everything that was taking place but that would have resulted in a much longer film and could just be my fault for not paying a lot of attention in History class. I'll definitely give this a second watch some time because I feel there is a much better film hidden under a pretty good film. 3.5/5 Also, I'm going to bet that Spielberg does an American Revolution movie in the near future. Vietnam has been done to death and he's done everything else (War Horse, Saving Private Ryan). I'm calling it now. |

Paths of Glory This was great, a much better and more believable WWI film than All Quiet On The Western Front (though that film was good for its time). Loved the cinematography as always, though there weren't many idiosyncratic "Kubrick shots" other than near the end. For a 1950's war film, I can't see it getting much better than this. 8/10 |
I saw Pain and Gain today and it actually surprised me. I heard ****ty reviews before I went to see it but when I found out it was based off of a true story. Out of the main three characters, I feel like The Rock gave the best performance and the whole time I just loved hating Tony Shaloub as an *******, he played it too well. Also at the end with the credits they show off the real people that the story happened to. I think most of the hate was only due to it being a Micheal Bay film but it wasn't bad except for the few jittery cam shots during chase scenes.

"The Witches" (aka The Devil's Own). Taped it on Turner Classics. Silly mid '60s Hammer flick, could have been better, wasn't bloody nor scarey even by the standards of the day. Liked the witchy ritual dance towards the end if only for the primitive musical instruments. |

Oblivion & I hated it it.
A place in the pines I'll see tonight, I hope that is good |
Commando (US 1985) with Arnold Schwarzeneggar and various actors playing some ill-advised people who kidnap his screen daughter, so, needless to say, they are there to be killed one by one. It's silly, but in a good way. I think it was Arnie's first film after Terminator and is directed by Mark L. Lester.
Aussie cult actor Vernon Wells seems a bit gay in this film for some reason. |

Super 8 I really liked it, it had some good characters and a pretty interesting story to it. It was a little longer than it had to be though. |

It looks like Super 8 but yeah might as well type the title along with the poster just in case it doesn't show up

So... I saw The Lords of Salem last night... and I gotta tell you nothing to spectacular there... I dunno what possesed me to watch this nor do I want to know...
I could follow the plot line just fine, unlike House of 100,00 (which was all over the place in my opinon... and I thought after Devil's Rejects Rob Zombie might have come into his own as a director/ writer... yeah ssss..not so much... After the film was over...it came to me what his inspiration for the film was... reliving his last weekend get away to Massachusetts..seriously...it was like he went to Mass with a boat load of drugs, a copy of the exorcist, the shining, black sunday and the velvet underground/ the velvet underground.... and wrote a script around that... I was hoping for more... I feel like the kid on Christmas morning that didn't get anything they wanted... |

Jagten AKA The Hunt (2012)
Past the first bits, I was glued to my seat. The whole situation seemed very realistic, which makes it all the more maddening. Mads was excellent as usual (as were the others). |

A cut price Shutter Island except that it came out 3 years earlier so if you liked that film then give this a go. Smaller on budget and far more subtle. http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...pyRW9zYGIn6kKg A great low budget concept enhanced by Postlethwaites presence but let down on an over reliance on previous documentary footage that could be perceived as biased. However; the concept of a lone guy sat in front of a computer screen (circa 2055) documenting mans downfall for future generations is intriguing and works well at times. All the documentary footage is real and adds gravitas but the over reliance on it means the purpose of the film is lost a little. http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...mO84je43OzeITm Pretentious twaddle or a masterpiece of modern cinema? I can't make my mind up either way. I loved it and hated it. After all that intensive viewing I switched off and watched: http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...-EHUbNtNwFjMyQ Why don't the producers of the Bond movies give the director Rob Cohen a shot at the next film? The guy can direct action so well and to be fair it is a Bond movie with a bad soundtrack. Completely preposterous film but who cares when the action is this good? |
