The Killing Fields

A disjointed mess of a film that survived and struck a chord with me strictly because of the powerful and true depiction of what happened and the performance of Haing S. Ngor. The fact that he wasn't an actor but relying on feelings of his own suffering from the war was a beautiful and powerful thing to watch. It saved the movie for me.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Well, there it is. That was the single greatest performance I've ever seen by an actress. Ever. Liz Taylor...you could win the Oscar for that role every single year. Amazing. The whole cast was amazing actually which is why they all got nominations and awards. It was like three incredible performances punctuated by a legendary one. Hell, all four of them should have won that year. Just incredible. I wouldn't be surprised if this film was the inspiration for Polanski's "Carnage" because they're almost one in the same but Woolf is so much heavier and just powerful. Really deep and profound film. Loved it.

I've been on a Western kick recently and I finally watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I just don't know what to think about it. The meat of the movie was great, but WHAT were they thinking with the soundtrack? Raindrops are Falling On My Head? While Butch is doing bike tricks to impress his girlfriend? What...happened...

So there's all that interspersed with some of the best Western action I've seen...so yeah...I just don't know...

That scene is one of the most notorious "what the hell?" scenes in film history. It's pretty much just ignored when talking about the film now.

There were a few other questionable soundtrack moments, but I'm not surprised it's ignored now. The rest of the movie was pretty damn good.

Haing S. Ngor was subsequently murdered in the US. A raft of elaborate motives were put forward, but it seems to have been due to his role in the film.

I decided that on such a beautiful day as today that the only real option I had was to go see this film in my local art house (The one I ran closed down a few weeks ago). I'm a fan of Jeff Nichols. I still haven't seen Shotgun Stories but I enjoyed Take Shelter so much that I was instantly excited to see this. It was worth the wait.

This is is Mathew McConaughey's best role of his career; not award worthy but damn near perfect in every way. I hope he continues doing more limited release films because he could really shine in them just like he did in this and Killer Joe.

The film is an American film down to the grit and the sandy shores of the river this story takes place on. The kids in the film carry it all the way through and really add to the visual style of it all as we are seeing things from their point of view most of the length of the film. I always thought the sun shined brighter and the air felt fresher when I was younger and you really get a sense of feeling watching these two carry on their lives. The film is paced very well. Slow enough for you to get the feelings and characters sunk deep into your brain but quick enough to keep your attention on the drama that's unfolding. It was a great watch and joins A Place Beyond the Pines as the years best so far.

G-Force (US 2009) is quite a funny film about guinea pigs who are secret agents. One of the most amusing parts involved a paranoid hamster who wanted his cage all to himself, despite it being in a pet shop. I know it does not sound funny, but Steve Buscemi's voice performance and the animation made it so. Although, seemingly for children, some of the sequences were a bit scary and the humour was definitely aimed at adults. I think the film was a collaboration between Disney's computer animation and Jerry Bruckheimer's live action/ preachiness. Presumably, Disney provided the cute animated guinea pigs and Bruckheimer everything else. However, it was not really expalined why the central characters are guinea pigs. I think Bill Nighy's accent was supposed to be Australian, but I am not sure. This was not explained either! Nevertheless it was enjoyable and satisfied my addiction for computer animated films, in the style of Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Antz, Happy Feet, etc. I love these films - it's the one good thing about the modern age.

I Sell The Dead -
A grave robber is finally caught after so many years of grave robbing with his partner in crime Will Grimes, With only a few hours until its his time to meet the guillotine, Arthur Blake spills his guts about his life of grave robbing and how he came to be in the position he's in to Father Francis Duffy...... Its considered horror comedy and in my opinon very very good and very funny. I give it 4 outta 5 thumps up!

A low budget Aussie revenge thriller that whilst lacking in originality, it made up in the visceral stakes. Superbly played by the lead and it has a decent sub plot that underpins the whole film. Some of the physical scenes let it down a little but a decent throwback to Aussie Exploitation.
http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...4h_riKyDAFWk5Q
Almodavar does it again. I really can't think of many directors (Lynne Stopkewich apart) that can take lurid subject matter and still make beautifully crafted movies full of pathos and emotion that in any other directors hands would be crass and unimaginative.

All I will say about this movie is that Antonio Banderas is a brilliant surgeon who designs a new form of skin that is much more durable than Human skin. To say anymore would be wrong. Just like layers of skin, the film peels back it's layers to reveal something far more disturbing than mere flesh.

One of the few Horror movies I have seen that doesn't actually have any physical Horror in the film. It's slightly overlong and the film does take an about turn half way that could test your patience but the last 40 minutes drags it all back into focus and should leave your jaw suitably dropped.

sorry for my laziness.

I really admired the cinematography in "The Shining" - you know how the lighting and direction of some films is just ... pretty? That was one of the things I liked best. I was also reminded of how much I love Jack Nicholson. Every role he's ever had has been perfectly executed - he makes his characters so believable, you almost forget you're watching a movie. I also really loved that scene where Jack's sitting in the bar in the Gold Room as it would have looked in the 1920s/30s(?) and there's flapper girls everywhere.

Overall it was a truly enjoyable film.

As for "American Psycho", there was a little too much sex and not enough violence. Christian Bale was a perfect choice for the role of Patrick Bateman, though. Just the way he delivers his lines without any trace of emotion is so creepy/brilliant. Besides, I think everyone has met at least one person who'd prefer to gaze at themselves in the mirror when they're fucking, because they're just that attractive.

I finally watched The Comedy and was riveted by it.
Strip away all of the silly Tim & Eric stuff, leaving behind only the vulgarity and darkness, and add a whole lot of slow moving, not-wholly-explained indie film moments, and you have this film.

An extremely slow-paced dark comedy, with moments of hilarity, crudeness, and almost shocking darkness. It's my favorite thing I've watched in quite a while. Synopsis: 40-ish fat & wealthy New York hipsters pass time by finding creative ways to be assholes to each other, and everybody else, including total strangers. A stellar performance by Tim Heidecker, whose character I related to in an uncomfortable way. Co-starring an especially old and fat looking James Murphy.

Valhalla Rising

Finally got around to seeing this. I love Bronson and Drive, and this is quite a departure from his usual cool, flashy neo-noir style. The Tarkovsky influence is very evident, although this is a bit more accessible (and less intellectual, sorry Nic) than that director's films. I was pretty prepared for the slow pacing and surrealist touches, and I honestly would've liked the pacing to be even slower. At only 90 minutes, it's hardly a chore to watch and I would've liked for it to have a little bit more room to breathe. The imagery, cinematography, and especially the soundtrack were great, and those red-coloured visions that One-Eye had were very effective and startling. My only major complaint would be a lack of a real meaning. The story is interesting enough (although fairly minimal), and there's plenty of symbolism, but it doesn't really add up to much. "Style over substance" definitely applies to this one, but it's only a problem because the film had all the right ingredients to be something grand. Regardless, it was an enjoyable and compelling film. 7.5/10

I hope you can differentiate the two. Top is Heidecker, bottom is the illustrous James Murphy wearing a shirt that can barely stay buttoned. And, yes, he mostly just "stands around" with hardly any lines to recite. He plays one of the generic middle-aged hipster friends of the main character. Not sure why he agreed to do the part really. Presumably Tim and Eric are his friends in real life.

Perks of Being a Wallflower

I read the book in high school and wasn't floored by it besides a few great parts. I found it to be a bit pretentious but had aspects of heart and knowledge of what high school can be like for certain kids. In a small way I grew up a lot like Charlie who is the main character of this film. Freshman year I didn't know many people as my friends from middle school started getting into sports and general douchbaggery and I was branching away. Over time I started attaching myself to certain groups of friends and I made a lot from all kinds of cliques but I never was REALLY close with a group until sophomore year. The difference was that my friends are 1-2 years younger than me but we've been best friends ever since and we still are. I also read books on my own in class and was very quiet when I wasn't poked for a response. Anyway, I connected with the film more than the book. The acting was very good from the kids. Ezra Miller is awesome. The kid can do comedy and horror very well as I loved him in We Need To Talk About Kevin. I expected the film to be a sentimental soup like the book was but it balanced it's emotions very well and I was actually choked up by the end. I'm going to probably purchase this because it just made me feel very good. Made me want to go hang with my friends. I think I'll do that.

I had never even heard of this movie until last week which means that I am seriously out of touch!

So many great moments and apart from the use of the net and a laptop in the film I thought that the film was set in the 80's. The fashion and music suggested so. Some great moments of surrealism and absurdity sets it apart from so many throwback movies from the last ten years (Will Ferrell, Judd Apatow etc).

The opening scene was enough to get me hooked.

Upstream Color

This is my film of the year. I loved every second of it and I have no idea what I just watched. No idea.

This is going to be a film I'm going to have to watch a lot of times. I just ordered the blu-ray as soon as it ended. For those of you who aren't privy to my nerdi-ness, Upstream Color is the long waited second film from writer/director Shane Carruth who gave us the best time travel movie not named Back to the Future...Primer. I've been waiting for a long time to see this. A long time. I watched the trailer once and it was enough to peak my interest and wait. It's playing at the IFC theater in the city but I haven't been able to drive in but I'm going to this week so I can experience this on a screen.

It's beautiful. Do you like Terrance Malick? See this film.
It's poetic. Do you like allegory and euphoria? See this film.
It's hypnotic. Do you like emotion wrapped up in a hallucinating haze of wonder? See this film.

It's got an amazing score, also by Carruth, and amazing camerawork. I can't recommend it enough. It's just that wonderful. It'll be unlike any film you've ever seen.

127 Hours. I knew that it got a lot of acclaim, but I went into it not really thinking it would be anything great. It really exceeded my expectations though. Franco actually gave a fantastic performance (which, as much as I love Freaks and Geeks, was shocking to me), and Danny Boyle made great use of the constrained setting and really gave everything an unsettling, claustrophobic feeling. And the climactic scene was brilliantly executed.

Haywire

Steven Soderbourgh seriously loves yellow/orange hue. Almost every shot was dripping in this hazy color and it struck me that his movies look very similar. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but just an observation. I thought this was a serviceable action film mostly based on the fight scenes coming off very realistic. The fight scene between Carano and Fassbender was especially impressive. The script was pretty bland and boring though. It was a film carried by it's direction and action scenes. I didn't really care about any characters or what happened to them at all. Overall not a bad watch.

Wreck it Ralph

Very enjoyable animated film. This just goes to show that last year was a great year for animated film. I loved most of the old video game nods and the voice work was great. Alan Tudyk's Ed Wynn impression was pretty spot on. The little girl was adorable too. I enjoyed it.

Going by the Book

Okay, I was surprised by this one. This was hilarious and the premise of the story was original and executed perfectly. After a string of bank robberies a South Korean city decides to do some intense training with their banks and police force. It is decided that one police officer will be chosen at random to portray a bank robber and rob a bank. The bank would be ready for it but they are to carry on and carry out the robbers orders without fear of being hurt. The police will then try to catch the robber without the fear of losing hostages. The police officer chosen to be the robber though is a perfectionist and does the job to the complete best of his ability. It's hilarious and completely unique. I laugh out loud multiple times. It's on instant netflix so there is a good chance most of you could see it. I advise you to do so.

I ****ing loved that movie. Of course, I'm a connoisseur of the terrible action movie. Yeah, the story was BS, but the action scenes were unique and awesome to watch. The fight scene in the hotel has to be one of my all time favorite action movie scenes. Just gritty, visceral, and amazing. And Gina Carrano is just gorgeous. Star Trek Into Darkness

all i can say is wow!

let me just say that i am not a trekie....i don't own Spock ears, i've never been to a convention, i only own one Star Fleet uniform shirt, (blue for a science officer) and i only know a few choice phrases in Klingon

but i was kind of raised on Star Trek and would honestly say that Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan would easily find it's way on a top ten list of all time favorite movies for me

this movie would also easily fit there also

right from the get go the writers were paying homage to both the original tv series and the wonderful second film from the original franchise....and the entire movie was filled with them....from the splendid scream of "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!!!" to Tribles (which made me realize that i'm probably more of a Star Trek nerd than i thought :) )

everything about this movie was amazing....the cast from the first film continue to play their roles flawlessly.....Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan steals the movie (as he should).....the plot was fluid and damn near perfect....creating a new story line while at the same time in many ways remaking the original film.....from second one to the credits this film is edge of your seat excitement and absolute fun as only a Star trek film can bring.....the effects were amazing and the 3d was exciting.....all i could think about when the credits started to roll was how i could not wait to see it again

also the preview for Ender's Game made me wet my seat

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Sorry Bob...

I thought this was a load of ass. ASS. First off let me say that I'm in no way a Star Trek watcher or fan. The whole series basically just flew right past me. I was the kid who just watched Star Wars over and over and over again. With that said this may be a movie that I would have enjoyed better if I HAD been a Star Trek fan but Bob wasn't so I'm going to go ahead and say that this film failed. There were however two redeeming factors...

Two great action scenes
Benedict Cumberbatch

That's all. The script was so weak. I didn't give a sh*t about anything that was happening and they really didn't try to get me to care. The "war" that could have been implemented didn't scare me at one bit. The "crew" being fought over held no emotional connection as to what happened to them. Oh, and that last scene was total garbage.

I really liked the first one so I was disappointed that this failed miserably. Could have been great but just ended up being cookie cutter Star Trek masturbation.

I really liked the first one so I was disappointed that this failed miserably. Could have been great but just ended up being cookie cutter Star Trek masturbation.

2/5

Have you seen the actual Star Wars films (pre Lucas rape?). Just curious, that's irrelevant to your review.

Unlike you, I grew up on The Wrath of Khan so I'm giving Bob the benefit of doubt on this one. Not so much that I'll see it in a theater though.
