Haha I'll go with conscious rap, considering "trap rap" sounds a little ignorant, and I don't like ignorant rap.

Recommend me some Hip-Hop in the vein of

Slum Village/The Roots/J Dilla etc...

Looking for music that is very well produced and in a similar style to the beats Dilla made. Examples:

Oddisee - Ready To Rock - YouTube

J Dilla - Mash - YouTube

Slum Village - Jealousy - YouTube

Apollo Brown & OC - Anotha One - YouTube

Basically more soulful/jazzy Hip-Hop.

I've heard most of the obvious stuff, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, ATCQ, Slum Village etc but recommend whatever.

Not Kanye West though.

EDIT - Mods can we leave this unmerged for a bit as more people will see it here than in the stickied thread?

Sparky 01-28-2013 06:22 PM

Sparky has a good list and add

Consequence , his movies on demand mixtapes
Pharoahe Monch's Desire
Phonte's Story of Us he's part of little brother so I guess that's already covered.

I almost saw them but I went to see OF instead and left right after I recovered my girlfriend, and they even put off their show so OF's audience could come.

50 Cent - Heat - YouTube

Not a recommendation but not really thread worthy; I don't like 50 Cent too much but this track is fucking hard, I like violence on tracks and he does it well here imo. Used to hammer this album in school.

 Try ProEra they're an amazing up-coming rap group. You could also try city lights they're decent when you want to escape the garbage we accedentily marked as hip hop.

I've always disliked that song. I got sick of the "Imma shoot you so gangsta where's my glock??" shallow songs a long time ago. And really in 50 cent's case, I just thought it made him seem like a poser.

In his defense he really is street and really that stupid of a human. I just find his raps kind of glib and monotone. He really doesn't seem that polished a rapper to me, but hes sold trillions to hes laughing at me all the way to the bank in his lamborghini.

Rjinn 02-22-2013 04:50 PM

Fair enough about the street thing but I still think he overuses it.

djchameleon 02-22-2013 06:45 PM

he raps about what he knows about and I don't see that as a fault. Plus , his fans love his earlier more street stuff and his mixtapes more than his official releases that just HAVE to have songs for the ladies on it.

That track is hard, some good lines in there, and it does have some nostalgic value for me as well. Hip-Hop is full of exaggerations anyway so I don't see the problem there. Biggie was never in the mafia, Eminem doesn't really have 80 pound balls and Big L never bombed any churches. Most of these guys are fake. 50 does at least have a criminal record and contact with firearms.

If I heard that track for the first time now I wouldn't like it, I don't actually rate 50.

No.

Roadidendren 02-23-2013 11:36 AM

lol. Fair enough - it's cheesey anyway and I'd much rather be a listener than a talker. I wanna find good music and share in a like-minded community.

Sup?

I should have substantiated on my original post.

Our forum is for the discussion and sharing of music, yes, but we are not a forum for the jumping off of new and upcoming artists. If you're musically inclined then integrate yourself into the forum and become a contributing member, then we have no problems with you sharing your music. Unfortunately 99.9% of the people come here with that one goal in mind, to post a link and then disappear, and that just chokes up the forum discussion, so that's why we have this policy in place.

Roadidendren 02-23-2013 12:05 PM

Hey dude.

Don't worry - we're on the same page. When I said share...I didn't mean my music necessarily - I mean contribute to discussion and sharing music in general.

Shaolin 02-23-2013 07:58 PM

Some great 90s tracks:

Fonky Expedition (Remix) - Conscious Daughters - YouTube

Rappin 4 Tay - Players Club - YouTube

Lighter Shade Of Brown - Hey DJ - YouTube

Playin' In The Shade - Lighter Shade Of Brown (HQ) - YouTube

FrigginParadox 02-23-2013 11:15 PM

Bane of your existence 02-25-2013 06:47 PM

Not new but so good.

Electrophonic Tonic 02-25-2013 10:03 PM

When I first head about these guys, I hoped they would fill the Dalek shaped hole in my heart. Not totally in love with this, but I think they have potential...

Psychedub Dude 02-26-2013 03:50 PM

Anybody know any hip hop artists similar to The Roots?

Goofle 03-05-2013 05:04 PM

The new Brotha Lynch Hung album is pretty insane.

Bane of your existence 03-05-2013 06:17 PM

Insane in what way? I was never a big BLH fan. I might check it out.
