Green Day have hardly had time to impact on a mass scale. They weren't exactly glamourised for their earlier better stuff, while their later stuff is getting all the glory but it isn't that flash, it just suits the trends of modern punk pop rock today, a trend which will hopefully mature sometime soon.

I put Slayer because practically every fast metal band out there I have seen them state the Slayer has influenced them. Green Day has influnced basically every pop rock/punk band of today though whether that is good or not, I am not sure and I dont think that needs to be debated in this thread.

Stevie Ray Vaughan had a huge impact on blues. He brought it closer to popular music and still kept it real.

SimeyC 05-24-2006 06:12 AM

I say it's a tie between The Beatles and Led Zepplin. Both have influenced the music market, and both are still finding new fans today...

Sound Devastation 05-24-2006 08:49 AM

Slint and Neurosis had a big impact on the music i like.. most wouldnt exist if it wasnt for them, pioneering post-rock and atmospheric metal respectively.

obviously there were bigger influences further back but i dont know them.

Winter 05-24-2006 09:43 AM

I'd say Black Sabbath, this is probably the top influence in metal.

PostPsychosis 05-24-2006 10:36 AM

I'd say a toss up between Sabbath and Zeppelin. Pantera are in there too for keeping metal alive and popular in a time when it might have died out.

metaliger 05-26-2006 07:46 PM

Depends on the music style...

Obviously Elvis, he basically introduced rock and roll. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles carried that on.

Pink Floyd were impactful because of their great lyrics. Black Sabbath introduced a heavier type of rock.

Metalllica and Megadeth introduced pure heavy metal music and dominated that industry. Then System of a Down, Disturbed and Slipknot (even though I hate Slipknot) introduced a new trend in Nu Metal.

And quite a few other bands were very impactful.

Where's my Bowie?

WTF?:( Nirvana essentially killed hair metal. Simple lyrics maybe, but an entire generation of kids and young adults took notice. Nirvana was to Rock n Roll in the 1990s what Led Zepplin was to Rock N Roll in the late 60s early 70s. It was a revolution. Kurt Cobain had heart and that was something that the hair bands didn't/never had.....this is of course my opinion.

I remember Nirvana before they were big (I live in the Seattle area) and I knew they were going to go far because they didn't try to copy any other bands. Influenced by other bands maybe, but never copied.

I'm not going to argue with you on this. My posts earlier on in the thread already cover pretty much my entire feelings on the matter.

And thanks for making me re-read this thread, I'd almost forgotten why I put boo boo on ignore.

Van Halen and Queen!

Gr8tLyrik 08-15-2006 03:57 PM

I would have to say the most impact to create a rock like sound would be the Beatles. And I think that metal was created through the music of Led Zepplin.

KURT COBAIN=NIRVANA

...Cobain = Lead guitarist/vocalist
Krist Novoselic = Bassist
David Grohl = Drummer

As you can see Cobain might have started Nirvana and wrote their lyrics but he does not make the whole band

Piss Me Off 08-17-2006 03:13 AM

I like the way he talks of Nirvana as if no-ones ever heard of them before.

I think The Beatles, in terms of impact on me The Smiths. Before them i listened to music every now and again for fun, after i found them it became an obsession.

andy 08-17-2006 09:07 AM

 There is no doubt that it is the Beatles

boo boo 08-17-2006 01:02 PM

It's without a doubt The Beatles.

the indivivual with the most impact on 20th century music would have to be Louis Armstrong

as for the bands you mentioned i'm not sure

swim 08-30-2006 06:58 PM

I want to say Pixies for my own biases but that is well wrong. You can't deny their huge impact on music today though. Anyways, The Beatles because good pop music is the easiest way to influence anyone.

tdoc210 08-30-2006 07:53 PM

Stravinsky mind you

Music Man 08-30-2006 11:10 PM

Of those mentioned on the list---the Beatles.

Even if you hate him, Elvis Presley should've been on the list. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones have both admitted that their bands would've never been if it hadn't been for Elvis.

"Before Elvis, there was nothing."--John Lennon

Stone Magnet 08-31-2006 05:49 AM

Before Elvis, there were a bunch of black guys doing the same thing.

The Dave 08-31-2006 09:28 AM

BB King and Elvis.

ddp 08-31-2006 11:33 AM

You gotta say the Beatles.

Gotta say would not have had motley crue on this list. I'd say van halen has accounted for many more kids taking up guitars in the name of rock than they had. Like the music or not that whole 80s metal scene came straight out of the 1979 release of Van Halen 1.

And yeah elvis should be on the list and so should chuck berry.

rsnjeff 08-31-2006 11:36 AM

Led Zepplin get's my vote.

QueenNothing 02-20-2007 10:10 AM

Tie between Zeppelin and SAbbath. The Beatles come in pretty close though, also.

PLus, it sorta depends....because they're different types of music. They all had big impacts in their genre...for exapmle the pistols were a huge punk band and so forth.

The Unfan 02-20-2007 10:26 AM

The Beatles had the biggest impact overall.

beat yr own KID 02-20-2007 10:35 AM

John Coltrane and the velvet underground.

MURDER JUNKIE 02-20-2007 11:30 AM

New Kids On The Block took music and marketing to "a ho 'notha level"

Like it or not, it is a fact
