I'm personally of the opinion that his voice has become more interesting as time progressed, and I am still yet to put my finger on what his time in Mercyful Fate reminds me of.
I'll agree that it's an acquired taste, but on the other hand it's one I share with the Devil

I can't remember what thread it was posted in, but I remember Il Duck posting "Claw" by Motorhead, which is possibly the baddest track off Orgasmatron.
In fact, the satisfaction from groaning "I know what my claw is for..." out loud after the song is finished is incredible, in fact I had the urge to do it on the train today.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts on power metal and I thought I'd join the fun and add my two cents...

Agent Steel - Skeptic's Apocalypse / Unstoppable Force
Most people would probably call them speed metal, but I think they fit

Cirith Ungol - Frost and Fire / King of the Dead / One Foot in Hell / Paradise Lost
The last two records get a lot of hate (especially from the band members themselves), but don't let that stop you from checking them out. This band is criminally underrated and it's a damn shame their record label, producers, and management screwed them over so much

Crimson Glory - Self-Titled / Transcendence
These are as good as it gets for my money. Steer clear of their third record where they went sort of pop

Deep Purple - "Pictures of Home" from Machine Head
An incredible proto-power metal tune from one of heavy metal's forefathers

Destiny's End - Breathe Deep in the Dark / Transition
One of James Rivera from Helstar's other bands

Distant Thunder - Welcome the End
Another one of James Rivera from Helstar's bands

Fates Warning - The Spectre Within / Awaken the Guardian
I love the first few records with Ray Alder, but they don't qualify for this thread

Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver / No Place for Disgrace
Thrashy, but there are plenty of power metal elements to be heard. Check out the title track from No Place for Disgrace

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I / Part II
What more needs to be said about these two masterpieces? They pretty much sum up power metal in a nutshell. I love the first EP and of course Walls of Jericho, but they were speed metal

Helstar - Burning Star / Remnants of War / A Distant Thunder
Killer stuff from another underrated band that should have been as well known as any of metal's other top players from the 80s. I didn't list the Nosferatu record because it's a bit more thrash to me

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
I don't know if you can say there are more than one "be all end all" of something, but if you can, this is definitely one of those be all end all power metal records. It's got everything you could possibly want. Just you try and avoid pumping your fist in the air

Liege Lord - Master Control
This is the record where they really hit on all cylinders. USPM at its finest. Their first two just never did it for me

Manowar - "Battle Hymn" from Battle Hymns
Lots of Manowar's material could qualify, but this is one of those early, definitive-type power metal anthems

Metal Church - Self-Titled
This is a record like the Overkill one I list in that it might not fit into the power metal constraints, but it's got a tangible power metal feel to me

Omen - Battle Cry / Warning of Danger / The Curse
I guess it's fair to call them a working man's Iron Maiden, but that almost sounds like a slap in the face. They were so good on those first three records, it's just a pity that they weren't (and still aren't) better known. Battle Cry is another one of those "be all end all" albums for me. Steer clear of their fourth album because the late, great J.D. Kimball had left the mic by then and they went more hard rock

Overkill - Feel the Fire
Speedy thrash, but has a distinct power metal vibe on songs like "There's No Tomorrow" "Feel the Fire" and "Kill at Command"

Queensrÿche - Self-Titled EP / The Warning
Queensryche was fantastic on the next two records as well, but they were more progressive and less power

Rainbow - "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow / "Run with the Wolf" from Rising / "Gates of Babylon" and "Kill the King" from Long Live Rock 'n' Roll
Some great early proto-power metal songs. You could say that "Kill the King" helped invent power metal and you just might be right

Realm - Endless War / Suiciety
Technical and progressive, but some power metal elements to be found

Riot - "Warrior" from Rock City / "Altar of the King" from Fire Down Under / "Wings of Fire" from Born in America / Thundersteel / "Storming the Gates of Hell" and "Black Leather and Glittering Steel" from The Privilege of Power
One of my favorite bands from this list. They should have been one of the biggest American metal bands throughout the 80s, but things just didn't work out that well. "Warrior" from their first album is a definitive proto-power metal tune that really laid the groundwork and it actually beat out Rainbow's "Kill the King" by coming out a few months earlier. I would say that Thundersteel is their only album that could be called power metal as a whole, but they have a number of songs that could fit the description. True torchbearers for metal in the US!

Sanctuary - "Battle Angels" from Refuge Denied
This band never quite clicked for me, but there's no denying the power of a tune like this one

Savage Grace - Master of Disguise / After the Fall from Grace
This band didn't last long, but they stuck around long enough to put out two excellent USPM records that are vastly underrated and mostly unknown except to the deeper digging metalphiles out there. Check out tunes like "Fear My Way" and "We Came We Saw We Conquered"

Savatage - Sirens / The Dungeons are Calling / Hall of the Mountain King
Essential USPM. The Power of the Night record had its moments, but was weaker than the masterpieces listed above. Steer clear of Fight for the Rock where they went commercial and fell flat on their faces

Saxon - "Power and the Glory" from Power & the Glory / "Crusader" from Crusader
NWOBHM that just oozes what power metal is all about. These songs had to influence so many bands that came after them and called themselves power metal

Scorpions - "The Sails of Charon" from Taken by Force
Ahh, the greatness of Uli Jon Roth... If you're only familiar with the Scorps for their arena rock anthems and power ballads, prepare to be blown away!

Thin Lizzy - "Warriors" and "Emerald" from Jailbreak / "Róisín Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend" from Black Rose
You might say "Thin Lizzy, power metal?!" and think these are a stretch, but just check 'em out anyway. They are epic, powerful, and really helped to form a style that had yet to be crafted

TNT - "Seven Seas" "Tor with the Hammer" and "Knights of the Thunder" from Knights of the New Thunder
"Seven Seas" is a power metal anthem for sure. Just hear it for yourself!

Vicious Rumors - Soldiers of the Night / Digital Dictator
The Soldiers record featured my personal favorite shred guitarist Vinnie Moore. There are different vocalists on each of these and both were solid

Warlord - ...And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun
An odd record, but one that many diehard metal fans swear by. I like it, but it's never quite reached the pantheon of the greats like Ample Destruction, The Spectre Within, or The Warning

Yngwie Malmsteen - Marching Out / Trilogy / "Riot in the Dungeons" from Odyssey
Those early Yngwie records have plenty of power metal for you to devour. Check out "Disciples of Hell" and "I am a Viking" from his magnum opus Marching Out. The record Magnum Opus is very good as well, I just wouldn't call it power metal

I often wondered why Virgin Steele appeared on so many best ever power metal lists and now I know the reason why. The concept albums The Marriage of Heaven and Hell are this reason, these are some of the most epic power metal albums that I've ever heard, this band really have mastered the more brutish American power metal style and fused it perfectly with the more melodic European style. They sound like Manowar meets Blind Guardian but with all the rough edges taken out, hell some of the riffs along with the diversity on these albums are amazing and they even fuse in AOR and ballads as well. I now firmly put this band as one of the best power metal acts around.

Virgin Steele The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Pt.1 1994

Now Pt.1 is a fantastic album but Pt.2 is even more amazing and every song is outstanding. The albums remind me of Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys and as great as those albums were, I'd actaully say these two albums by Virgin Steele are better song for song.
