I feel like there's definitely some overlap between grunge and post-grunge, and Pearl Jam falls somewhere in there. However, Pearl Jam also sort of feels like Alternative Metal in the vein of Alice in Chains.

I think people have trouble understanding that some metal can be less heavy than some rock, especially some alternative rock. Pearl Jam definitely has a lot of metal influence, I can hear a lot of Alice in Chains in the louder bits, and a lot of Tool in the quieter parts. But Nirvana, IMO, is much heavier than Pearl Jam, but beyond that, Nirvana has very little in common with metal.

On a slightly different note, anybody hear the similarities?

Especially in the chorus of HSB and the middle section of MIL, seriously similar.

I still don't agree genre-classification wise, but I get how idealogy differs than that of say, punk or other late 80's indie rock. But whether that's enough to sanctify it as it's own niche is still up to debate.

Sorry for the double post, but came up with a different point.

The point of genres is to classify things that sound similar. It's not so much about elements as it is about the overall aesthetic created. For instance, purely based on the elements, you would never group Days of the New in with Pearl Jam, but the overall aesthetic created is definitely similar. Similar enough to both be in the same genre. The overall aesthetic in a band like Soundgarden or Nirvana could also fit with Pearl Jam, and so it fits into that genre as well. This is really simple, guys, I can't believe we have to take up so many pages with this garbage. Nirvana's the most overrated band of all time anyways.

@Tristan

If you're saying you would group Nirvana, with say, Dead Kennedys, or Sonic Youth, or even with Big Black, I think you should take another listen to the music and notice how dissimilar they sound.

My main point is that the "big 4 of grunge" could be neatly classified into other categories, and at times Nirvana has had a lot of post-hardcore elements. Pearl Jam, AiC, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and even "traditional" grunge artists like Mudhoney have a lot more dissimilarities than they have in common.

In an attempt to bring this back on topic, Freak Out is on Art Rock and Experimental rock. Mothers of Invention and Frank Zappa both did that same album. So where should it get off? I'd say it fits better in experimental. Why not put Velvet Underground and Nico in its place (since the album's not very psychedelic) and replace it with something like Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company. We should also make some room for The Grateful Dead. Psychedelic, Folk Rock, and Country Rock could all hold this.

I like JGuy's solution. Cheap Thrills replaced Velvet Underground on Psych, Velvet Underground replaced Freak Out! on Art Rock.

How about American Beauty replaces something on either Folk Rock or Country Rock? It's up to you which.
