-*Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is making good on one of his campaign promises, and it's accelerating deforestation in the Amazon. The rate of rainforest destruction has soared more than 60% compared to the same time last year, a Brazilian government agency reports. So, right now the Amazon is losing an area of rainforest a little larger than one and a half soccer fields every minute. Environmental groups blame Bolsonaro, a far-right populist, for the quickening pace of destruction, saying he has relaxed controls on deforestation.*-

I thought the meteorologist did a good job of keeping it 100.
These are points he snuck in: * It’s only a partial fix * It would take decades * It would take as much land presently occupied by the United States * OVER POPULATION IS MAJOR PROBLEM * The forests would have to remain unmolested until they’re are old growth * We are presently in a major mass extinction He definitely had an upbeat optimistic tone but the subtext was a rock solid: We’re ****ed! |
I think those people know full well their audience will skip over the subtext and make sure to make an Arbor Day post on Facebook.
