If you’re an over-population denialist you may have problems understanding this simple problem.

More than 75 percent of Earth's land area is already degraded, according to the European Commission's World Atlas of Desertification, and more than 90 percent could become degraded by 2050. The commission's Joint Research Centre found that a total area half of the size of the European Union (1.61 million square miles, or 4.18 million square kilometers) is degraded annually, with Africa and Asia being the most affected.
More terrible news. Thanks OH ;)

As well as the depressing figures, the bad news is about where it's happening, because of course we are so used to turning our backs on problems affecting Africa and Asia. So much environmental damage is invisible to us in the developed countries, which makes it so much more dangerous. :(

"Invisible damage" reminded me of the hole in the ozone layer, which in the eighties was an early warning to scientists and governments that all was not well with the environment. Because it fell out of the headlines years decades ago, I thought an update might be instructive:-

India has 1,000,000,000 people and 3,000 tigers.

Andrew Yang on climate change last night:

Quote:

“The United States is only 15% of global emissions. We like to act as if we’re 100%. But the truth is even if we were to curb our emissions dramatically, the Earth is going to get warmer, and we can see it around us this summer,” Yang warned.

The 44-year-old contended that despite efforts that need to be made to curtail climate change, the world is already in trouble.

The last four years have been the four warmest years in recorded history,” Yang said. “This going to be a tough truth, but we are too late. We are 10 years too late."

“We need to do everything we can to start moving the climate in the right direction, but we also need to start moving our people to higher ground. And the best way to do that is to put economic resources into your hands so you can protect yourself and your families,” he added.
This is absolutely correct. I live in the direct line of fire of hurricane alley and right now I would not be able to evacuate.

Also, the greenhouse emmisions are already in the atmosphere and there is no way the heat that is being trapped in our atmosphere will not grow exponentially . With the emissions in the atmosphere and the sun shining it’s already over for low ground residents across the globe. The floods are coming. The heat is trapped in because neither the emmsions nor the sun are going anywhere. Yang is the only candidate who said anything about how he’s going to help me, personally, when (not if) my community becomes inhabitable.

I hope Florida is terraformed soon.

I understand that sentiment. There’s a lot of beauty in climate change. Florida going underwater will be aesthetically a profound improvement for Mother Earth. It’s important to keep in mind that nature is still beautiful even when she’s killing you and from an objective standpoint the process of dying is a very beautiful process. In fact, life can be defined as only the process of dying.

OccultHawk 08-01-2019 10:53 AM

He made a very visceral point that resonated with me. $1000 could be the difference between camping in the Carolinas with my dog or dying.

No plan is keeping Florida above water.
