Using this more as a metric for when the public truly stopped caring about rock.

Everybody was talking about the videos dawg.

Oh and there's Tame Impala and Imagine Dragons. Weezer covering **** got popular for some reason too.

Next big hitter will be Kendrick's rock album.

I saw mainstream attention happening in regards to Tool's album last year and before that people made a big deal about Greta Van Fleet as the "return of Led Zeppelin".

What's happening right now is a gradual (but inevitable) takeover of the mainstream by influences coming out of the synthwave and "dead" vaporwave scenes. As evidenced by the huge response The Weeknd got when he tapped that sound on Blinding Lights.

If I were to go out and canvas the public would any of that be a blip on their radar? Would any albums be a blip on their radar?

What's happening right now is a gradual (but definitely happening) takeover of the mainstream by influences coming out of the synthwave and "dead" vaporwave scenes.

You might be surprised. I have a younger cousin who is about as MOR as you can get in regards to musical awareness and she told me all the college stations in Cali and Washington state are favoring bands like The Midnight and Kalax now. That's the next "thing" on the horizon of mainstream awareness.

That being said, I'm not sure we'll ever see some kind of complete cultural wave of solidarity around a specific scene or genre again. People just don't approach music like that anymore.

That's more related to the decline of the album than the public's interest in rock you fake ass Scotsman. All of the artists mentioned would get decent recognition amongst this average Joe fella and his friends for their recent work.

If you're looking for an album though, American Idiot came out the year after St. Anger. I also remember Viva la Vida getting tons of buzz at the time (2008) but I'm not sure people could remember the album title over Coldplay's name. Would St. Anger be a blip on the general public's radar?

I hope so. There’s so much great stuff flooding bandcamp from that genre. As far as pushing music in a certain direction I too suspect it’s going to be looked back on as extremely important.

Some is, a lot of it isn't. Go listen to death's dynamic shroud's catalog or *pulls good album out of the hat* something like Seed & Synthetic Earth by Vektroid. It's a big world out there.

I hate that BS name. What internet nerd/music hipster came up with that name? Honestly who names a Wave after a instrument? Gramps: "Remember back in the Roaring 20s when Clarinet Wave was all the rage."

Name's not really any dumber than "New Wave" or "Shoegaze" tbh.
